Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for something that fits better than MCP math for my K and 2nd grader... (who are really NOT that far apart in understanding)
Would MUS be very intense for me as a mother (with a 3yo and 14mo underfoot as well as a a 10yo)

I am also interested in Right Start Math, but it scares me a little...

I looked at horizons, but am unsure of the anti-Catholic publishings of the company (not the Math itself)..

Can y'all help a fairly newbie?

I don't find MUS to be intense. You can purchase dvds that teach you the material and you could have your kids watch with you. The teacher's manual also explains the material.

I also don't find Math U See intense at all. Most of my kids watch the dvd alone and do at least two lessons and one review and then the test. Once in awhile, I'll watch it with them if they didn't understand the lesson so we can talk about it, etc. I love the dvd approach as it almost takes me out of the equation. :)

By the way, I used MCP for years, which I liked just fine, but somewhere along the way switched to MUS and Teaching Textbooks and am very happy.

Good luck!

We use Right Start (and I'm not familiar with MUS, so I can't compare the two). I like it a lot. It would probably be considered fairly teacher-intensive - I guide him through the lessons and so far there isn't a lot of independent work.

I like how it is very hands-on and teaches the child to understand the concepts, rather than emphasizing memorization. It uses a lot of manipulatives, especially the abacus, as well as math games. My son loves the games! We wind up playing math games a lot just because he asks.

I'm happy with it so far. I hope that helps a little :).

A second one who uses RS here but I also can't compare. We're using A for my 4-year-old. I just prep a tray the night before we're going to have a math day and read through the 2-page guide. It takes about 5 minutes to prep. Then in action we "do math" for about 10 minutes. Other days we just reinforce the concepts as it presents itself. So at this early stage it is more Mom-intensive than a worksheet but really a lot easier to put together than say our CGS religion lessons but less self-directed than Montessori activities. Hope this helps.
