Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Moms~

We have been doing RS level B with our almost 6yo. She is doing very well. I have extended most lessons to make sure that she is understanding the concepts because I do think it goes a bit fast.

She just did the 9 week test, and I realized that while my daughter can add 1,246+3472, she CANNOT recognize shapes.

Almost at all. The only shape she recognizes is a circle.

So...this morning, we had her stuffed animals out, and we were playing with a shape puzzle meant for younger children...and I had her animals tell me the shapes, etc (her using her voice). This way, it was complete and total play for her (in her mind) and homeschooling in my mind.

It's not that we haven't covered shapes, but I have noticed that RS breezed through them...and has either left untouched other concepts that I remember learning in 1st grade...or has only briefly mentioned them...and yet, introduces concepts like "perpendicular", which I probably never learned until 5th grade or so.

I have supplemented with the inexpensive math books for Barnes and Noble for when we are in doctor's offices, waiting places, etc...

Is this just par for the course? Or am I missing something?

Did she not remember the names of the shapes at all, even with gentle hints? (Starts with Sq..., Re..., 4 equal sides is a Sq....)

We have not had that problem at all, and we're at RS C, but I have found that we have to refresh sometimes.

Usually shapes are covered in preschool and k. Maybe RS thinks this is just a review? Did she seem to get it now that you have reviewed? If you are only on the 9 week review, I would not worry about missing concepts. RS seems to cover everything but often in a different order.
(like multiplication before subtraction). Awesome that she thought of it as a game!

I know RS A covers folding figures in half midyear and all sorts of shapes are included then. And they use rectangles, squares and circles in all their exercises in A. (We're not doing B this year, so I can't remember B). However, I always use Montessori shape cards and Geometric shapes as a supplement in Kindergarten and 1st grade just because I think it's fun and easier to remember with a tangible object.
