Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Trying to plan math for my rising first grader. Right now I am looking into Math U See and Right Start. I have heard great things about both.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

I bought McRuffy Color Math which I was really excited about until I say Right Start. It looks awesome. I am going to do McRuffy since I bought it (and it also looks great). I am supplementing with Miquon. I'd love to hear from somone who has used Right Start.

The reason I didn't choose Math-U-See was because I didn't want to have to do the DVD's and I didn't like how you just do one thing (addition, subtraction, etc) for an entire year. I know some people who use it though and LOVE it.

I didn't care for the MUS dvds-- you can order a sample dvd to see if you like it.

I use Rightstart and am very happy with it. I can tailor the pace for my dc,
and they love the games. I feel like they are really *learning* math concepts, not just memorizing facts.

We use RightStart and love it. I have taught levels A through E and my son is half way through the Geometric approach. My husband is the "engineer" and really likes the way math is taught through this program. I am not anywhere near an engineer and love the program because it makes so much sense. This program really teaches the student to think mathmatically and not just do something because that is what the formula says to do.

The difference between MUS and RS was explained to me this way. Look at the two sets of *'s below. In which one can you see the amount easily without counting?

********

or

***** ***

(hopefully the spaces between the stars in the second sample will show up once I hit post!)

Anyhow, the first sample is MUS and the second RS. Your child will see and understand. The research that Dr. Cotter did to develop this program is really interesting. I would think it is available somewhere on their web site.

best wishes,
Aagot

Thanks so much for the information. Aagot, your description of the differences was so helpful.

Now, would first grade be level B in Right Start?

Level B is perfect for first grade. If you get to a point where it seems too difficult, you can always slow down, play more games and stretch the lessons to two days. I think you will really love teaching math this way.

Here is an older discussion (one of many) on MUS, just for more info!

Use the quiz on the RightStart website to see where to start for your child according to his abilities. Usually B is First Grade.

I just LOVE RightStart. I can't rave enough.
