Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Today I got my weekly Math by Email email....

I really love this resource from the CSIRO. Anybody else use it? (We also get the science by email every Friday.)
We're going to do the Imperial Pie activity.
It's a recipe for a pie, but the kids have to change all the measurements from imperial to metric before they can make it and with units like Drachms, fluid scruples and Gills, it might take them longer than you think!
What I found really fascinating was that only three countries in the world don't use the metric system. The USA, Liberia and Burma. And the USA actually use a different imperial system (known as the American Customary). The US system uses avoirdupois ounces and pounds to measure weight and in the larger measurements they are actually different to typical Imperial measurements. In the USA a ton=2000ounces, an Imperial ton=2240ounces and a metric ton=1000kg=2205ounces!

I know it's all fairly basic information, but my little guy (he's 7) loves this stuff and my older two love the activities as a change from the regular daily grind of high school math!

Anybody else get these emails?
