Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I decided to switch everyone to Math U See for next year.

My 4th grader is switching from Saxon 5/4. She could do it, but didn't like it and it took her 1-2 hours, even with doing only even or odd for the review section. I am thinking she needs more mastery to speed things up. I started her on Gamma this week and am thinking we might have to skip way to the end of the book.

My 2nd and 3rd graders are finishing ABeka and are just fine with it. I just wanted all three to be in the Math U See program for simplicity.

Now I am second guessing myself and the mastery approach. Should they really focus on one operation for such a long time when they currently are understanding a whole array of concepts? Will they get enough practice with time, money, temperature, etc?

Will this feeling go away once we start using the Math U See or should I go back to something like Singapore that we have used before? Both have more of a mastery approach, both have a strong teaching element and both use (or can add) the use of manipulatives.

I am driving myself nuts. I just want to find a program we can all stick with!

Did you already look at MEP? If you have, I won't go into the details about how it achieves mastery through application. It is teacher intensive compared to other math programs, but well worth it IMHO. Of course every family has a different dynamic.

We switched from MUS and I agree with your concerns--the program was just too focused on learning the algorithms of arithmetic.
