Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

have the view solution option if a child gets a problem wrong? My ds is finishing up saxon 7/6, but is starting to hate math even though he is quite good at it. He's 10. I use tt for his sister and he thinks it looks interesting.

Also, if he is finishing up 7/6 and understands it can I just move to pre algebra? What do you think?

I would have him try the pre-tests that they offer on the website to see where he would best be placed.

I found this information about the Solutions CD for pre-algebra, with some samples to view online:
http://www.teachingtextbooks.com/v/vspfiles/tt/PreAlgebraSol utions.htm

I LOVE TEACHING TEXTBOOKS, and will be using it for all my kiddos in the future.

I can't say enough for Teaching Textbooks...and I love that you can view all of the solutions which are very clearly taught by the way. We use TT for all of our kids( 4th, prealgebra, algebra I, algebra II, Geometry) and now looking at precalculus.
We used Saxon for years before switching and we sticking with TT.

This is what impressed me about TT. It is what makes it a great option for parents who are not so strong or confident in math.

Perfect for your friend here.

Has anyone used the Pre-calculus one yet? I am considering it for senior year for my ds.

I tried the pre-calculus examples online, and I was able to do the math...and I am sooooooooo not a math person!

mariB-

Do you feel that the prealgebra/algebra fit the bill for math minded kids?

In algebra, are the solutions on a different CD? That's how it looked on the site to me, but I wasn't sure.

Thanks.

Mary Ann,
My 16 yo ds did the pre-calculus this year from TT. We did run into a little trouble in about the 2nd month where he just wasn't getting it and I had to sit down and go through it with him, but after about 2 weeks of that, he took off and since then has never needed a bit of help. He finished the course right before Easter (even with the extra review and test days added in, it doesn't stretch out to a full 36 week school year). He doesn't want to start anymore math right now so I'll be filling that time slot with Thinkwell's Economics (I think )
He had done TT for alg I, II and geometry also.

ps. I think Nancy (guitarnan) has used precal and one other person at least too, b/c I posted back when we were having trouble.

Hey,

I've heard people complain that Algebra 1 doesn't cover everything most Algebra 1 programs would cover. I was disappointed because I'd been sure this would be right for ds, who seems to be headed for a math/sci/tech future (and his mom, who was an English major ). Any thoughts about that? I thought about making him do both 1 and 2 next year.

Thanks!

I've heard that criticism, too, mostly from people who love Saxon. If you compare the contents of each of those, they are a bit different b/c don't they put some of the geometry into it? but I believe that by the time you used Alg I and II of TT, you'll have covered everything necessary for high school. And both are pretty long so I think doing both in one year would be pushing it a bit unless your ds is a real math whiz and loves more, more, more!

We've just finished the precalculus course and I am still undecided about its merits. When I was in hs, we took Trigonometry after Alg II, and then either calculus or pre-cal if you weren't quite ready for calculus (sort of like you only took pre-algebra if you weren't ready for algebra by 8th grade; it wasn't a necessary step). I asked TT what happened to trig and they said it's covered in pre-calc. I would say that some of what I remember from trig was covered but not all, and I don't think it got far enough towards calculus either. I am not sure if ds would be ready for calculus in college next year. Fortunately he's not interested in math/science anyway so he will just take whatever math he tests into (probably another precalculus) and that will be fine.

Karen - I would say the same as you about TT Pre-Calc. But then my son tested into and took Calculus in college and it turned out he was prepared for it, so who knows? He is also not a math/science person, but the calc. course he took was for everybody, from history majors to chemistry majors, not watered down or anything.

Peace,
Nancy

Well, that's good news. My ds had to take placement tests for math and English before enrolling for dual-enrollment at the local cc this semester, and while he placed directly into Eng 101, his math placement wasn't so good. He would have been taking algebra again, but we weren't planning on doing math there anyway since he was finishing up pre-cal. The counselor said he could practice some tutorials online and retake the math placement a couple times more, that probably he had just forgotten some basic stuff since it'd been 2 yrs since he finished Alg II. I hope that is the case b/c he's going to take chemistry there next fall and needs to be past college algebra for it.
