Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd (8) has been doing Miquon math since we started homeschooling 2 1/2 years ago. She's enjoyed it and seems to have learned a lot from it. Of course, this is the only math program we've done. We're currently on the yellow book which is the second to the last one. Have any of you used this program? If so, what did you use after? I've heard so many good things about Math-u-See, but I'm wondering where I'd begin with another program. Any ideas? THank you!

Courtney,

I moved your post to "Living and Loving Numbers" where I think it will get a better response. I haven't used Miquon, but have used Math-U-See. At Math-U-See's website they have short printable placement tests that might be helpful. Maybe other potential curriculums have similar placement exams?

Saxon and Singapore math also have placement tests on their respective website.

Math - U - See has great concept intro but imo you either have to have lots of time to be creative coming up with problems to practice and lots of time to sit and show them the concept or you need to find supplemental materials. You also need to begin using math vocabulary at some point as Math-U-See is a bit light on that.

Saxon is full of repetition, easy for the teacher and student to use but a bit weaker on concept explanation (they truncate concepts into the tiniest incremental developments that dc sometimes get lost in the part and have trouble seeing the whole). The repetetion can get old and sometimes you need to focus more on the newer concept instead of the multitude of review problems in every lesson.

We have just been looking at Singapore Math so haven't had a chance to really evaluate it yet.

I'm no expert - just used a lot of different things. A lot depends on your strengths and weaknesses and childs temperment/tolerance level.

The Sonlight website has a lot of info, and sample pages, of different maths programmes. Miquon is one of them! So, it may be helpful for research on your next programme.

We use Math-U-See; their new curriculum (this is our second year using it) has more practice problems. The older version did have "Extra Practice Sheets" you could purchase, which I did. I think there is plenty of practice in the new version, although you may want to add some drill of math facts if your children need it. We use flash cards, math wrap ups, or CalcuLadders sometimes.

Thank you, all! I think I will check out Sonlight's site. That's where I originally decided to use Miquon. Someone on another loop mentioned the Key to Series. Have any of you used this one?

Mary Pride, in her Big Book of Learning, suggests the Key To series after Miquon. Sonlight sells them and may have extra info on their site.

I use mostly Australian stuff in the elementary years so can't help with personal experience - sorry!
