Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone used calendar math with their early elementary children? I stumbled on this idea yesterday and it really resounded with me for my son's learning style. I tried to find some free templates and ideas online and came across some good ones, but I'm wondering if anyone has a link to good calendar activities and resources for approaching K/1 math in this way.
Thanks!

Could you let me in on what you found? This would be great for my first grader.

I used this last year and am again this year. Both me and my son really liked it. I made a wall unit with a poster board and put the month calender, tally sheet, weather graph on it. Then I laminated cards with the days of the week, numbers for days, months, and a year. I put velcro on the backs of them. Then on the poster board I put the other velcro side. So, my son would attach them to make the "Today is Friday, August 7, 2009. My son would write the date (8/7/09)on a part of the board that I put packaging tape on so we could use erasable markers. I also took 9 toothpicks & 3 bundles of 10 toothpicks and had 2 pockets to represent ones place and 10s place and he'd put the appropriate amount in for the day. It's easy and fun and all the printables are right on the site.

Actually, Hubbards cupboard was the site I first stumbled on for calendar math ideas. I spent some more time poking around there this morning and I think it's a great resource. Toothpicks are a great idea. Did you do then just for the date, or did you keep track of a running total of days in "school"?

I just did them for the date. It really helped my 4 yr old grasp the whole place value concept by doing it everyday. I'd say "Ok today is the 14th. How many tens are in 14? How many ones?" And then he'd put the appropriate amount in each pocket.

Because he could count to 100 very easily I didn't see the point in keeping track to the 100th day. Plus I wasn't sure how to handle weekend because we tended to neglect our calendar on the weekend. I can see where some kids would find this pretty cool though especially the 100 piece puzzle idea. I may actually add that for fun this year especially since my 2 1/2 year old will want to see all that is going on and he might find this building picture interesting.

This year I am adding a teddy bear that my little ones will dress appropriately for the weather of the day. I picked out a few infant outfits and jackets. This will help with button/zipper/snap practicing as well.
