Does anyone have any children who have used Rightstart Math and performed less than admirably on Standardized tests? I have a friend who just heard some unsettling things from a MODG advisor, saying that children who use RightStart do not perform well on the PSAT and SAT. What information I could glean included some complaints about the program not being spiral in its approach. This unnerves me because we've used it from the beginning. My friend called Dr. Cotter and she says she doesn't have any data about how students using RightStart have perfomed on those tests yet.
Any experience?
Kathleen

That sounds odd...I mean RightStart ends at the 4th grade...you don't even think about those tests for another 6 years after that.
I haven't had experience with it...but it sounds weird to me.
Well we have done RightStart and went all the way through, we just aren't to that testing age yet...so I guess we'll see. My RightStart dc have done really well on their CAT tests, fwiw.

Kacky,
To clarify...the consultant cleared some things up. She says that students who take the MODG Assessment tests score poorly in Math who have used RightStart. They extrapolate that this would mean poor scores on the "similar" PSAT and SAT at upper grade levels. Hummmm....
I would be curious to know how large a sample they are working with. I just thought I'd see if anyone else had experienced lower than expected results with standardized tests.

My son is in fifth grade now and has used Miquon Math, one year of Singapore Math, the last two levels of RightStart Math and is working on RightStart Math Geometry in addition to some of the Key to Series. He's done extremely well on his last two PASS tests, scored in the highest percentile. My daughter has been using RightStart Math, half a year of Singapore Math, and Miquon Math. She hasn't taken any official test, but does well on practice tests.

That seems a pretty loose extrapolation. I would think that its possible that a child learning through RightStart or Montessori wouldn't "test" well because the tests are not done in the form they are accustomed to practicing math, but to ignore the coming years of Algebra and advanced math in books as a means of preparing a child for "testing" as in the SAT doesn't make sense to me.
If your child is doing well in RightStart, I don't see how another child's performance on the placement test for MODG is enough of a reason to doubt they could perform well on the SAT simply because they are using that math program.

Kathleen, if it is working for your family then I would just turn a deaf ear to all of the RS bashers that are out there. Seeing that you only use RS for a limited amount of time, I don't think there is anything to warrant concern over SATs.
I would be really interested to know how many students this consultant is basing her judgement on.
Blessings,
Julia, a RS user for over 5 years and happy with the results

This just seem strange to me. RightStart is such a comprehensive math program that I find it hard that a large sample size would do poorly...
By law we have to do yearly test and FWIW my two DS's have scored 100% in Math each year that we have tested.
I will also say that as an engineer by trade this program will DEFINITELY lay an appropriate foundation for all the math that you will ever need to know (not saying that other programs can't...there are many good ones out there.) I wouldn't be the least bit concerned if it is working for you and your children.
