I have used Saxon math with all of my children and noone has had any problems......up till now! My 11 yr. daughter is almost finished Saxon 54. But she makes so many little mistakes! Mainly they are careless errors. I've tried assigning more questions for each careless error; earlier bedtime for each careless error.....Now, I've thought perhaps it's too much and she just gets tired and if I give less, she'll give more kwim? So, now she does a 1/3 of a lesson a day. It does seem to be helping a bit. But I'm wondering if there is a curriculum that would be better suited to this? Or any other ideas?
I'm going to have her continue to do Math daily throughout the summer so she doesn't forget any concepts. Plus, I thought I'd have her work through MATH IT and maybe timed drill sheets? I don't want to bog her down with too much though, as we are actually taking the summer "off" of most book learning.

I always have my kids go back and fix any errors.. they are not done until everything is right.. in the end it is faster to do it right the first time.

I too, have to cut back my son's lessons. He is also 11. Sometimes it takes us weeks to get through a concept. Sometimes he only does 3 or 4 problems a day, after reviewing the lesson. We use Singapore-and only starting 4A. Maybe it is just the age? I am also trying to do math through the summer. I can't imagine doing it all again in review at the beginning of the year

How does your daughter best learn???? Is she left brained, or right brained?
We used Saxon with our oldest two (boys), who were both pretty left brained, and it worked EXCELLENT! We did use them with the DIVE CD Roms when those became available. They both did pretty well in math, and seemed to tolerate Saxon very well.
Our daughter, now 14, began to have many problems in math. She HATED Saxon, and didn't seem to retain any of the information. When I finally realized it wasn't her attitude, but how she learned, though challenged by her right brained learning style, I decided I'd better do something about it!
I saw a workshop at our state hs convention that helped me a ton! It was by Dianne Craft Dianne Craft's website "Teaching the Right Brained Learner" has helped me tremendously!
We swiched math programs to Life of Fred Math and we also used the Key To Series by Key Curriculum Press These two together have really been the "key" for us so far! She is still having difficulty with computing and speed in her math, which we're working on (got very low score on her CAT in math computation). But she's understanding the concepts and retaining them SO much more! She got a GREAT score on the math concepts on her CAT test this year. So now we can focus in more on the skills she needs, and are happy she's finally saying things like, "Oh, NOW I understand that!" Those are SWEET words to me!
I'm not sure whether this is the problem with your daughter or not, it may not be at all. But just in case it is, I thought I'd share our story with math, in case it may help you, or someone else reading this.

Careless errors are often because of carelessness but, I've also seen with my work at Kumon and my own kids, that sometimes the errors are a sign of something else..Tiredness? Is it difficult to concentrate on Maths for that length of time? So, your idea of less problems well done seems a good solution ( and very CM-ish ).
Sometimes, it is a eye issue - does this happen in other areas, does she need her eyes checked?
Sometimes, it is setting out - using lines and graph paper can help.
My kids, the ones who did Saxon, often only did half the probelms - one day all the odd, the next day and on the next lesson, the even. Enough review but not too much. Quality over quantity.
My younger ones who do Kumon find it easy to just work through, use a solution book if needed, adjust the number of pages to the concept - soemtimes more pages of math, sometimes less.This helps to reduce the careless errors for them - they seem to concentrate better?
