Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My son just finished Singapore Math 5B yesterday. Judging how he did on the last comprehensive reviews, I would say that they are some concepts he hasn't grasped well, especially fractions and percentages. He is also careless and makes some silly computation mistakes. He dislikes math and loathes the idea of doing math through the summer. I feel that he needs to work some during the summer so he can progress to Singapore Math 6 next fall. How can I review these concepts in a fun and efficient way? any resources you can recommend? any advice?

Thanks,

Natalia,

Does he like sports? Aren't percentages used in sports a lot?

Well, two things you can look at are Key to Percents and Key to Fractions. They are inexpensive and easy to use. Or you could look at Family Math. I vaguely remember something using ratios and GORP. Maybe some of the RightStart games might help. (I don't know -- Joseph hasn't gotten that far, and I didn't use RSM with my older kids.)

Does he grasp the connections between percents, decimals, and fractions? THey all just different way to express the same thing. Which one you use depends on the situation at hand.

As for sloppy errors, perhaps you can give quality discounts -- the more accurate his work, the fewer problems he has to do. (One hsing mom I know was very fond of this strategy; I have never used it myself.)

A firm grasp of fractions and fractional arithmetic is essential for algebra. It's worth spending the time getting this thoroughly understood. I had college students whose grasp of fractions was shaky, and they struggled with precalculus.

HTH!

In Christ,

Thanks for the reply Deborah.

I have forgotten the Keys to books. He did book 1 and 2 of fractions. I have to dig book 3 and 4 out and have him work on that. I might even have the percentage one around here.

I like the idea of the "quality discount". I might try that.

Have you use Singapore Math? I used it with my dd when she was in elementary school. I really like it but I am wondering if maybe it is not the program for him. He has complain before that the explanations are not enough. Maybe I should switch programs...

Anyhow, thanks for your suggestions.

I used the upper level program New Elementary Math with two of my daughters. I liked it a lot, and so did they. After 3B we did a unit on logarithms (one with TOPS math and the other with another Singapore text) and then went to precalculus. The older of those two found the explanations easier to follow than Saxon's which I used only briefly with her.

However, I am a math person, and I could work out problems in order to help them or explain things or connect concepts as needed. I think there is more support now to help people then when I used NEM. Btw, the NEM workbooks are really more like review and test booklets.

In case you are wondering what I use with my only homescoolie (or even if you are not), I am using RightStart Math with my son. It's very slow going for him as he is autistic and severely language delayed, but it's going.
