Please would you share what you use for K math. I don't know why, but I am stressing more about K than all the older grades.
Regarding Math - I like to use manipulatives etc - but ultimately I think Math just has to be done. I read living books about Math, we have tons of Math games - but in my opinion, some program has to be followed.
My older ones have all used Horizon from Grade 1 up.
I am just not sure hwo tough the K one is. Anyone used Saxon? I have never used Saxon - but I kind of like the sound of the K program.

I used Saxon for about 2 weeks and then bailed. Couldn't do the scripted lessons, and so much of it my K child already knew through real-life experiences. Since then, I haven't followed a program, and this works very very well for us. But if you are hoping to follow a program, I've heard good things about Math U See and Living Math, though I have no experience with either. Hopefully some others that do will chime in here. I used Ruth Beechick's little math book for a general Kindergarten scope & sequence.

I'd also like to tag onto Marilyn's question, since we're both seeking similar things. I know she isn't doing Montessori in the math areas, but I was wondering if there are some good math programs that works well the bead materials?

I haven't used Saxon K, but like Sarah, I enjoyed the Ruth Beechick book. Here are a couple of other ideas you might find helpful, from my past blog posts:

Marilyn -- I have 3 kindergarteners and we have used Horizons K Math. My kids have loved it, and have done very well. As the teacher, I like how the concepts are taught. I talked more extensively recently in another recent post around here somewhere. I'll find a link to it if you want.

Thank you - I think it is on this thread
I looked at some of the samples on Sonlight - it looks quite good. My little guy is a young K - but he loves Math so maybe it will work.
I downloaded the manipulatives list from Sonlight so I can figure out what I already have.

Just echoing what Sarah said about Saxon - I really disliked the scripted lesson approach. There was just too much stuff going on in there, plus the program is ridiculously expensive. I was attracted to the use of manipulatives initially, but the hands on approach can be accomplished so much easier with other programs.
I didn't like Horizons or MCP math either. My kids get really distracted by hot air balloons dancing across the page, or bears riding bikes, or all of the other graphic images on the pages.
We've had the most success with a Montessori approach to math in the younger grades. One of the reasons I like it so much is because I don't have to force a lot of writing - obviously no workbook pages here. That was a big help for my reluctant writers.

I've never used Saxon for K math, but I did use it for 1st and 2nd grade, which I think is very similar. It was ok, but definitely scripted. At the time I didn't know any better since she was my 1st, so I liked the hands on and how it told me what to say, since my confidence wasn't there.
I'm using Math U See now with all my girls (one of which is K) and we are liking it alot. I actually wish I had started my 12 year old with it from the beginning. It has the hands on, but also has a DVD of Math U See's creator teaching it. So I watch him first, then I explain it to the girls. Plus it has the teachers book, too. None of my girls LOVE math, but my oldest 2 don't complain like they used to.

We don't do anything for Kindergarten math. I have lots of math-y type stuff laying around and my 5yo tends to gravitate toward those things while we are doing math. Sometimes we do math games from Family Math or Games for Math. I really try to sit back and see where they go until about 2nd grade. We did try Saxon K once, but it was way too boring and long for my taste!

For my boys, we did the activities in the What Your K Needs to Knowbook. My dd used MCP Math K this year. I liked it because I could explain what to do in a minute or two and then she would work on it independently.

We used MCP for my second son and it was nice just for the kid who wants "school" to do because siblings are doing it. I really prefer a living math books/activity approach and that is was I consider to be our main math program until second grade-ish. BUT I just ordered MCP Math K for my daughter who keeps begging for "math" to do when her big brother sits at the table and is not satisfied when I give her an activity or game. She just wants a workbook basically.
She still wants to do the games and read the books, but when the boys sit down at the table she wants "math" to do, too. Like I said, though, I just consider that sort of an extra, not an actual math program.
