I've been looking into Teaching Textbooks for my sons. They are 8 and 10 and both doing 4th grade MCP this year. I really like TT and think it will be a much better fit for them, but have any of you used it for two kids simultaneously? I suppose they would have to do it individually? Right now we sit down and "do math" together, the three of us. So, if you have two doing the same level of math, I'd love to hear how you do it. Or if you have any TT experience and can offer some suggestions on how this could work, that'd be great too. Thanks!

Well, you could get two workbooks, and one set of CDs, then listen to the teaching parts together on the CDs, do the work individually in the workbooks, and then enter it together on the computer to see if you are right? Would that be kind of like how it works for you now, doing it together? The lower levels of TT keep track of how many problems are missed, so that really wouldn't be accurate, but other than that I see how it could work. The problems in the workbook are the exact same thing as what's on the CDs. (BTW, I only have experience with TT6, FWIW)

Molly,
I would speak to them about your situation. I think you can use it one CD two or three times. I also heard from somewhere that they are ok with you making copies of the workbook. I think they are very nice and easy to work with.

You are able to install the CDs twice on one computer in this instance.

I wanted to ask and see if anyone knew how to do this? I have two children using TT and the gradbook keeps their record. I was wondering if I'd be able to delete Chelsea's work on TT#5 when it came time for Annie to use it and likewise for Garrett's math.
I don't want this to take away from your question, Molly, but it would help to know if this is possible.
We have the workbooks but haven't used them. I probably should have saved money there. If they allow you to make copies (I think they do), I would get one set and have the boys watch the lecture then work on their worksheet, then check it together like Amy suggested.

I believe you uninstall and then reinstall.
But you could call TT and ask.

Q27. Why am I only allowed to install the Math 7 on two different computers?
A. You can install the Math 7 an infinite number of times on a computer, which means that as one child completes a school year, you can just reinstall and have another child do the course the next year. This allows the whole family to use a single Math 7 set. We have also allowed installation on a second computer to accommodate families who need two children to work on Math 7 at the same time. The program is designed to block installation on more than two different computers; however, if you need an additional installation because of a new computer purchase or to have more than two students use the product simultaneously, just call our office toll-free at 1-866-867-6284 and we can give you another installation privilege. Unfortunately, experience has taught us that the number of installations must be limited to protect against the use of a single product for an entire classroom
I may be wrong about two installations on one computer. You would have to call and ask them.

Molly,
I just saw this question. My kids are older but I wanted to share our experience with 2 kids doing the same level of TT. I had a 7th grader and an 8th grader both doing Pre-Algebra this year. These kids have been on the same grade level for about 5 years now and we always have done math together, the 3 of us, as well. Since TT is so user friendly, it really doesn't require any help from mom so the kids can do it independently. I know the program is a bit different in the older grades (doesn't record grades, etc.) but I got them their own textbook and they shared the CD's. I had them watch the CD's by themselves, as opposed to together, because I wanted them to be able to pause or rewind when they needed to and not feel so competitive with each other. This was our 1st year using TT and it was a huge success.

How did you know that I've been sitting at my planner these last few days mulling over this very subject?!! I think my boys would like TT, but I have a Saxon brain. If they truly did work more independently with TT, it would be worth it. But, if I have to still sit and teach it to them, I'd rather do it once and work simultaneously with them using Saxon. I know that I have to consider their learning styles, but I have just not had success using programs other than Saxon (and believe me, I've tried!) because they don't suit my teaching style. I hate these decisions, because they are expensive and I strongly dislike switching programs mid-year if one doesn't work out. Thanks for letting me talk this out a little...
I'd be thrilled for anyone to come along and throw some advice my way, or make the decision for me !

Molly,
We had been using Saxon successfully too, until last year. I had heard that once students hit 8/7 or Algebra 1/2, Saxon's amount and level of instruction was insufficient and confusing for many kids. This proved to be the case for us, and we're not math dummies either. Do you know anyone nearby who has a copy of TT that you and your boys could look at? Have you looked at the samples on the TT page? In my experience, there really is no need for mom to teach with TT, unless, of course, you want to! Praying for your discernment. I know how you feel.

Molly,
With TT you definitely do not have to sit and teach it to them. Not at all. There is a lecture beforehand then they have practice problems to work then the regular problems and several lessons before they are given a quiz. If they miss a problem it immediately shows and tells them what they did wrong.
It grades everything and all Mom has to do is click on "gradebook" to see their scores.
I so wish we'd had this with my oldest ds and I so wish I hadn't let the price tag paralyze me last year.
One thing my friends told me to watch for was if you see their scores slipping, most the time it's because they're skipping the lecture and practice problems. Yep!

Molly,
Come on over, you and your boys can check out TT5 and TT6 at my house, then we'll go to the pool.
