Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dd is using saxon 54. Is is necessary to finish the whole book before moving on, or is there a point where it's just stuff from the next book anyway? I'm trying to schedule how many of the lessons need to be finished by the end of the year.

Thanks, Valerie

Have you tried using the Saxon placement test that they have on their website? If she is testing above Saxon level 54 it seems like it would be ok to move on. If she is testing under 54 I would proceed with each lesson. You might also consider just giving the tests and figuring out which types of problems she needs reinforcement.

Valerie,
We never seem to finish a book by the end of the year. And yes, each book has at least 20-30 lessons of review at the beginning of the next book.

I really don't schedule any lessons. We do a lesson a day, then when we hit the end of the school year, we close the book. The End.

At the beginning of the next year, we start by moving about 5 lessons at a time (per day.) We review. I assign problems to be completed. As long as they miss 1-2 or less and they are clearly not comprehension related errors I keep up the fast pace. Somewhere around 2 weeks into the year, about lesson 40, we slow down to one lesson per day.

Oh, we're the same way! We've found that the next year's Saxon could have as many as 40 lessons that are review! Really, in a homeschool it seems silly to spend that much time reviewing--we choose to do it once and move on .

Hsmom, we are using Saxon now for the third year, and we also have had some lessons left over at the end of the previous two years. The kids seem to be able to easily transition to the next book.

I've never tried the placement tests before, though, thanks 5athome. I may try them for the next year before my oldest switches to 87.

It never occurred to me to skip over some of those review lessons in the beginning. Duh! It's so easy to become a slave to the textbooks.
