Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi ladies!

Short and sweet background - I have failed miserably at sticking to a "formal" math curriculum with my girls, I just haven't found anything I love. And maybe that is because they are so young yet. We are pretty relaxed and the majority of what we do is FIAR and art/nature/crafts and lots of reading.

SO...without a math program per se, I've been neglecting math. I just don't think of it or when it comes down to the moment I can't think of anything on the spot. We do have lot of math "fun" stuff that I try to pull out periodically - pattern blocks, funtastic frogs, linking cubes, etc.

My question...I'm getting there, lol! Does anyone use a math notebook/journal with K and 1st graders? What do you put in it? I love the idea of just working on a colorful or crafty page every day or so and working on math that way.

Here is what I'm thinking of so far. I want to print off a blank calendar and have them write the month at the top and the fill in each number for the day.

Then, maybe work on printing one number everyday, my younger one needs this practice. The older one is ahead of the game a bit in most areas and reading on a 2nd-3rd grade level. She has done adding and subtracting, but nothing but here and there.

Do you have other ideas for things I can do in a math notebook or journal on this level?

Thanks!
Candace

Hi Candace,

You sound like you have a great plan. Here are some ideas that work in our family. Perhaps they'll work for you too.

FIAR Math – Write about the FIAR Math activity in our journal.

Shape Walk – Take a walk and see what shapes are around us. Draw pictures of shapes in journal.

Number Walk – Look for one slide, Two of swings, Three benches, etc. Draw pictures in journal.

Calendar – Keep track of weather by drawing sunny day, rainy day, cloudy day, snowy day in each square. At the end of the month graph how many days were sunny, rainy, etc.

Snack Time Math - We sometimes do math at snack time. We like to eat "fractions" - apples, pizza, sandwiches, etc. We’ve used stick pretzels for Roman numerals and making tally marks. I’ve cut cheese in various shapes and looked for crackers in fun shapes. We’ve used holiday themed candy (candy corn/autumn mix for the fall, candy hearts for St. Valentine’s Day, etc.) for graphing and making patterns. All these things can be written in their book.

I’ve also written a math problem down in their book. They solve the problem then they narrate how they got the answer. It’s a neat activity for me to see how their mind thinks.

HTH,

Mare, those are fabulous ideas! Thanks so much!

I can definitely use a lot of those!! I love the idea about drawing what type of weather you are having on the square and then graphing at the end of the month! And using our FIAR book to do a math page - great idea!

Thanks again!

Candace,
I came up with 30 math journal ideas and posted them on my blog. A lot are for older kids but I also linked to some other sites for ideas for younger kids. We do math journals once a week along with a living math book and game. It is a nice break from text work.
