We have borrowed this book from my local library. It is published in the U.S. My nine year old is having fun with the book - titled "Marvellous Multiplication - Games and Activities that make Math easy and fun" by Lynette Long. It uses simple materials - die, matchsticks, paper, a pack of playing cards....
I see from the blurb that the author has also written Dazzling Division. Sounds like fun!

Leonie,
Thanks for the recommendation. We're off to see if we can find this as we need to do some multiplication work with 8 yo and probably wouldn't hurt the 11 yo. I was just browsing the math site wondering if anyone had game recommendations to make multiplication fact practice useful and fun. Hope our library has it.

Leonie: Thanks for this recommendation.
Marvelous Multiplication sounds great -- and according to Amazon, she's written a whole series that might be fun to look through.
Not only is this a great recommendation, Leonie -- my library actually HAS IT

Boo Hoo! Our library had it but someone walked out with it in June of 2004, so thanks Mary G for the link. It looks like we will be purchasing it. I was just getting ready to go on-line to become frustrated trying to find it with my limited computer skills when this popped up and you just saved me hours!!! I guess God is reinforcing my recent attempt to take baby steps at not stressing and now God provided through you. Thanks

Well, thought I would give you an update. We ordered the Lynette Long multiplication and division books to see how they were. They must be great - they came in the mail several days ago and I have yet had a chance to look at them because someone else always has them. The 8 yo and 11 yo have had their nose in them - figuring out the games and I haven't gotten a turn yet.
The 14 yo came to me wondering if she could do some of the games instead of all the Saxon. I figured she needed some facts practice so she is substituting playing games with her brothers for 1/2 her normal Math and loving it. I figure they'll get twice as much done when they have the facts/concepts down cold. Thanks for the recommendation. I suspect several other of her books will be on my curriculum order next year.

Dear Janet:
I'm so glad you got them and like them -- our library had almost all of Lynette Long's books so I was able to peruse them. They're above my littles (and below my biggies), but Im going to keep them in mind for when my littles become older
It's wonderful to find a fun way to teach math -- becuase math can (and should) be fun to learn; many of the textbooks make it so much harder than it needs to be!

We just got Dealing with Addition also by Lynette Long that Leonie recommended somewhere else. My 6 yos and the 4 yo are using it for math and the 2 yo wanders in and out as we do it. We do a few pages a day with a deck of cards close by. We haven't gotten to the game at the end yet, but the kids are having fun making different combinations of cards add up to different numbers (A+A+A+2=5 or 2+2+A=5 for example). I just wanted to mention it since it is also a lot of fun and ok for littler ones.

Those are some of the ones I'm looking at for next year's curriculum as this year we have already overspent our budget! . If they are like her other books, I'm not sure you'd need to do all that much formal Math until much older. It looks like it takes you through all the major concepts of elementary and middle school prior to Algebra or pre Algebra. I think I also saw some other ones on Amazon.
