Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Last month we talked a lot about what math programs were in the running for this school year...

There was a lot of talk about the Rand D manuals- did anyone go ahead and get one?

Also, Lori mentioned that she had purchased a Shiller Math kit. Lori, was that the kit that covers K-3? I like the looks of it, but that one is pricey. If you have yours, what do you think so far?

I'm not making any final math decisions until after my family is moved and settled, but I am still so uncertain about which way to go. I do need something that is "user friendly" for me- if it is too labor intensive to get going and keep going I fear I could burn out- hence my attraction to kits in this area.

I'm breaking out my cuisenaire rods this week just for the kids to play around with. Sheesh- I don't know why I feel so "blocked" in this one area (math). Back to the old praying board....

I thought about getting something in addition to the Montessori stuff. But then I thought about just exactly what my goals for dd are this year and I believe that the Montessori materials will cover that and then some.

Here are my main goals for her:
Counting and number recognition up to thousands
understanding of place value to thousands
simple addition
simple subtraction
understanding of concept of "half"
2 and 3D shapes recognition and nomenclature

I think that should be enough for her at this age.

Looking at the materials I have, I see that even if I simply get through the first several presentations she should be doing well.

I think I have kind of the same goals as Theresa, since math just didn't really gel with my dgs last year. I'm going to go back to the start and go from there. For right now I'm going to use the Moteaco album for math 3 - 6. I plan to build from there and just see how math flows.

I'm also going to have a few math pages printed off or torn from workbooks we have and leave them in a basket for him to work on as he wishes. I don't want math to be painful this year, but instead I'd love for it to be an enjoyable experience for both of us.

Yes, I agree, with Theresa and Vicki in that I don't want to make it more complicated than it needs to be for my dc. Not that I'm suggesting that this is the case at all, but I tend to do too much for certain things, and for me, Math is an area where simplification is best for me.

I know Angela has the R & D's Math manuals, perhaps she will let us know some more particulars!!

For my youngers (3, 4.5, 6), I'm just going to do the presentations from the Moteaco and MWEI online albums. I have enough homemade materials for that age group that we should be good to go. I'll probably add in Base 10 Blocks once we get to working with place value, which will also be helpful for my 3 oldest as well.

Since I don't have materials for the older ones (8, 11, 12), don't have a good grasp at how to go about presenting Montessori math at this level, and they don't have the prior foundation in Montessori, I'll be using Math-U-See with them. I think one of the strengths of this program is the emphasis on using the manipulatives to get a firm grasp of the concept presented before moving into the abstract work of writing out and solving the problems. The teaching videos are a plus for this mom as well.
