Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Chalk up another success story for a living approach to math!
Just for kicks and my own curiosity I printed up one of those Texas State standardized tests (free online) for 6th grade math and ds took it yesterday.
He made a 91 percent on the test. I don't know what "percentile" that would be because I just scored it myself, but I'm guessing it's pretty good, based on what I've seen as a teacher (where getting 50 percent of the questions correct puts a kid in the 90th percentile!)
I felt very satisfied because the only things he missed were topics we had not yet addressed, and a few careless errors.
So I know we are on the right track and that ds can be successful in math without the daily textbook grind.

I found two areas for improvement:

1. story problems: he had a bit of a struggle at times figuring out just exactly what the question was getting at. He is just not used to the style of language textbooks use, and some of them looked like they were purposely worded awkwardly, so we need to practice picking out "key words" from word problems.

2. Geometry of triangles: we just really have not been there much yet, so I am not surprised he missed this. Luckily, this is the topic recently addressed by Denise at her Lets Play Math blog. So, we have a fun way to cover that!Plus he loves her Alexandria Jones series and is inspired to do geometry by that, so it will be great.

On the other hand, I also found that the test did not even come close to the level of his skills in other areas, so it balances out well for me.

Anyway, just wanted to share a bit of a success story in case anyone was wondering about the wisdom of a non-traditional approach to math.

That's wonderful, Theresa! I'll be trying to follow your lead as my boys get older. I love the idea of going textbook-free for math. It's so important to me that they get the concepts and enjoy it rather than just learn the operations and formulas, which is the way I learned. I made A's all the way through college calculus, but still could not understand the meaning and purpose of what I was doing most of the time in math. So I'm looking forward to learning with my sons.
Congratulations!
