Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know when the new version of Intermediate Language Lessons will be done? Margot? Anyone?

Also, I know Margot was doing some other Language Arts books, does anyone know about those? What grades, etc.?

Thanks!

I don't know, but I want to know too!
I can't wait to give her my money for these products.

Is there a site other than Hillside that has updates on products in the works?

Hi Lisa,
I'm working on ILL, but I'm not sure when it will be done. Many financial obstacles . . . would appreciate prayers on that. I am hoping to have it done for this coming school year. I will know by the end of March if it is going to happen; I'll post again when I know for sure. I don't have any other new Language Arts books coming out this year. I have a great desire to do a Stories with a View II, and the follow up to Lingua Mater 7, but those don't seem to fit into the plans right now.

LOL - thanks Martha! Happy to oblige HAHA.
There is one more thing we are working on that I did not post on the blog yet: a coloring book companion to Catholic Mosaic. I wanted to wait until it was a little further along before advertising it. But I talked with the artist today and it seems to be on schedule.
Thanks
Margot

Thanks so much for answering, Margot.

Two more questions...what is Lingua Mater 7? What ages is current Lingua Mater written for? Isn't it 6th and 7th?

Thanks!

Well, there is supposed to be . . . someday . . . a whole series of Lingua Mater for grade 3-8. Least that's my plan. Lately I have doubts that it is God's Plan. ANYway, the current Lingua Mater is Lingua Mater 7 and many people are using it for two years for 6th and 7th grade. This seems to work well for some. I think that the book gets harder as you go along and that the kind of analysis is better suited to a 7th grader (or 8th grader). I don't recommend it for 11-year-olds. Some are using it for 7th and 8th and I know one family who is using it for 9th.

Margot, do you think Lingua Mater is appropriate for an 8th grader (supplemented with grammar)?

I've been asking myself that question all year. I've used both ILL and LM now with one boy. He didn't seem to really get into the rhythm of ILL and do well with it till 5th grade, and LM was a struggle at full pace in the 6th grade. I like ILL very much and want to use it for 4th-6th with the rest of my children, but I often wonder if the last 3rd is enough for 6th grade. Then I'd like to use LM, but I'm not sure if moving from ILL to LM is too hard of a transition. Anyway, I'd be grateful for opinions. I guess I'm not exactly sure what language arts needs to encompass in the jr. high years.

Looking forward to the Mosaic supplement! Woohoo!!

Oh yeah...

How's that ILL coming along? Will we get to pre-order it like we did the Catholic Mosaic? My paypal account is ready and waiting!

Some people on this forum have moved from ILL to LM with success. I think it depends on the child. Before I had considered reprinting ILL, I had a 6th grade book planned that had a substantial grammar practice section in the back of it. (It's a reprint of another old English book.) It's possible Hillside could produce that grammar section as a supplement to ILL for those that want more grammar. I'm still working through in my head what ILL will be in the 6th grade - what I will have time for. Do I do a straight reprint for now to get the book out (Lost Classics is out of print of it and has no immediate plans to reprint it.) and then revise it later? Or take more time now and make it the way I would want it to lead into LM.

Please continue to pray for this project. My life has become very complicated lately and I'm struggling to get time for - well, for anything that I want to do.

Thanks Martha! We can take pre-orders, but we better wait until I am sure that I have it ready to go. It may not be ready until May or June. I know that makes it hard for people who like to make their decisions and purchases in early spring!

I'm so sorry for your struggles, {{Margot}}. I would guess that getting ILL used is probably not too hard considering how long its been around, if you want to wait to make it into what you really envision. But that's easy for me to say since I have the old one. Do you think the last section of ILL is enough for 6th grade except for grammar? I'm wondering what would be different in the transition from ILL to LM...

I'm wondering that, too!! I know that I would include more writing, more thinking. I think that some of the conversation pieces could be beefed up. Other than that, I think that it's a good transition.

Some people have requested more intense grammar study and that's why I mention having a supplement. The MODG curriculum moves out of ILL for 6th grade to a more pointed grammar program, knowing that they get a lot of writing in the other subjects in that program. It's important to Mrs. Berquist that the kids "nail" the grammar by the end of 8th grade. But I think that if you are liking the style of ILL, you can make Part 3 an effective 6th grade program. It is short, though, I mean it might not take all year to get through what is in the book, you'd have to supplement with something to stretch the lessons to fill a year.

So all these things I am mulling over as I work through the 4th and 5th grade levels. I'm pretty set on the changes I am making there - it's just getting time to do the actual tedious work of formatting the text that is bogging me down. But, even at ten minutes a day I am making progress.

I forgot to answer an earlier question about using the program in 8th grade. Yes, some families are using it for 8th grade and told me they wished I hadn't printed "An English Course for 7th grade" on the cover. Really you must do it with your child whenever it best fits his/her progress.

I have been so dejected about some of the errors I have found in LM. I have updated the files now correcting all the errors I know about (there may be more ). Please be sure you download the errata sheet from the website if you are using an edition printed up to this time.

I guess I'm more of the "what's the hurry" type in philosophy...I really dislike the conversation pieces so would love to see those changed, but I think its easy enough to do the bulk of the assignments along with narrations from other subjects and have plenty of writing completed by the end of the year.

You know, there are an awful lot of grammar programs available to suit many different styles. Effective CM style programs are much more in need. Its just .02 but if the grammar is what is holding you up, I would go ahead and publish without it.

I know someone who used it for 8th grade too, very happily. How about future printings reading "A Junior High School English Course" so that 7th is the average, 6th is the advanced pace, and 8th is the slower pace???

Oh, don't be. It goes with the territory, don't you think? Its a wonderful program and that's what counts. I love it (in my best Monty Python voice)!

Books, I have used LM with three children and one was an 8th grader (the other two in 7th). She just wasn't ready for the literature end of it, so I saved it for 8th. She's in 9th now and is taking a few single courses through Seton. In their English 9 she is getting A's, so I would say LM does prepare a child for high school English.
