We are just finishing up First Language Lessons and I am not so sure I want to purchase the FLL for third grade. I am contemplating rod and staffs beginning english wisely 3rd grade and Voyages in English. If I went with vie - should i go for the older version or the newer version. Or does something completely different ring your bell and I should consider that.
Help me decide. Pro's and con's of each one. thanks in advance for helping.

Hi Robin! I just saw this topic. What did you decide to go with?
We have tried just about everything, except Rod and Staff. Voyages is pretty straightforward. I like the old version for its Catholic content, but the new books are more visually attractive.
My kids really like the Language of God books from CHC. I prefer something like Simply Grammar, but if they are happy doing their work and learning at the same time, who am I to argue?
Welcome to the forum!

Hi Molly.
I decided to go with Rod and Staff this year. From everything I have read, it seems to be the best bet for us for now. We will see how my ds handles it. I usually modify about everything we use for his learning style. Which frequently changes...after a couple months gets bored and I have to change the presentation method. Keeps me on my toes. We will see how it work.
Thanks
Robin

Hello,
I have used R&S for 3rd grade. We are finishing it up with my 4th grade,10yo dd.
I have been pouring over friends programs, descriptions in catalogs, even calling to speak with those who write different curricula.
I have decided to stick with R&S. It is sooo "textbooky", but it is so straight forward, with simple and clear directions and examples. I am ordering grade 4 this week, and will be supplementing with Wordsmith Apprentice.
If I were to give advice, I would strongly advice you to always go over the lesson presentation with your dc before each lesson-and if need be, you can always do at least half of the lessons orally.

Thank you Christy, Robin and Molly!!
This discussion helped me make my decision for next years English for 4th grade. I have used Voyages and FLL.
One question. Would you recommend that I purchase the 3rd or 4th grade?
I am soo happy God lead me to this Forum!!

Hi. I purchased rod and staff grade 3 and it seemed too intensive for him. We just finished First Language Lessons and I thought it would segue pretty well. James is just ending first grade, but was able to do the 2nd grade portion of FLL with no problem. After looking at r&s, FLL seemed light. Rod and Staff looks like an excellent program. So we decided to go with the 2nd grade. That way, even if it is easy for him, it will reinforce what he learned, plus give him what FLL didn't. Which wasn't much writing. Then we can progress to R&S Grade 3. My husband said that if I hadn't changed books - FLL, then 3 rd grade would have been okay. But I was trying to change both grade and curriculum. He said it isn't the scientific method of change. He is right of course.
thanks -- robin

Hi Jennifer-
I would definitely go with grade three. Also, as you go along, each new grammar rule is noted in a little box somewhere in the lesson that it is introduced. What I had my dd do, is write out each one on a different colored piece of paper, cut it out, then paste onto a black poster board. This is placed close to where she usually does her lessons. This kind of adds in a break from the boring rule after rule, and gave her a place to quick glance when she was needing help.
Not that you asked!
