Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just started doing some narration with my 7yo daughter. She is very excited about reading the Billy and Blaze books by CW Anderson. She has been reading about 1/2 of each book at a sitting which in reality is usually about 10-15 good size paragraphs.

She is doing really well and seems to like doing it. But my question is this. She likes to look back at the pictures on the pages while she is doing the narrations. It seems to jog her memory about what happened. I've been asking her to shut the book and just try to remember but she just can't seem to help herself.

So with her age and experience level with narration, would you recommend I let her look at the pictures or should I strongly encourage her to do it from memory?

Thanks so much,
Michelle

I encourage my dc to look back through the book so the pictures will jolt their memory. Maybe I'm doing it incorrectly too Doesn't seem to affect them really though as they are far better at remembering all the details than I am and I'm the one reading.

Different people "access" their memories in different ways. Visual memory is a pretty important pathway for most. The prevailing explanation (in some circles) is that we access memories by the route in which they were created. Ex: if we learn the ABC's through song, we will access them by singing them (if only in our heads).
So, this means that your dd is likely absorbing the meaning of the book not only through the words but through the pictures. If you take away the pics, you take away one of her access routes.
You might try once reading a short story without any pictures at all, so that her entire experience is auditory. See if it makes a difference when asking for narrations. She may have difficulty if she is very visually tuned. She may even try to go and sit in the same spot where she was when she heard the story in order to get that visual cue. I would not discourage this type of activity as it is simply her way of remembering. However, you may want to do some short auditory recall exercisies in order to strengthen her auditory memory abilities.
Just my opinion.

Great! That all makes total sense to me.

I will allow her to look at the pictures then. She does a fabulous job doing it that way. Just wanted to make sure that she wasn't "cheating".

Thank you so much!

Sincerely,
Michelle
