Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 7 yo boy is really having a hard time learning how to read. In fact, we are still trying to get the alphabet sounds straight . . . I'm trying to be relaxed and not worry, but I also feel like we need to do whatever we can to make things "click" for him!

The kids and I just ordered and watched the "lapbooks" video from Tobin's Lab, it was wonderful! Since then I have this idea brewing of maybe making a phonics lapbook. He is a child who likes to be active and DO things, including cutting and making things--that is not my natural style, but I am trying to adapt this year for his sake (hence the lapbook video!). I just wondered if maybe lapbooks would be a good way for him. I bought and have been reading Ruth Beechik's little book about reading this summer, so I am thinking of getting some of my "categories" or topics for the little booklets from this. My idea so far is to maybe have a page or big extending flap for each vowel, then little books and fold outs of different combinations with that vowel? Like on the "e" page, have booklets of en words, et words, etc?

Has anybody tried something like this, or have any ideas for me?

I'm also wondering if we need to check hearing, or for disabilities of some sort--if anyone has any wisdom for me.
