I have a question for those of you who haved used this book. Do you use the index cards like they suggest in the beginning of the book? This is my first time to use this and I was wondering how others have done it.

We always made our own index cards, but never kept them up.   

I considered ordering the flash cards for my 3rd grader (since we still don't have a complete set) but decided against the extra expense.

We made our own cards because I thought the kids would retain it better. I found an index card-sized binder (at the drugstore maybe) and index cards with holes punched as refills. It worked great to keep them in the little binder - we just flipped through them for review. I did the color coding on the cards and wrote the Latin or Greek root. They wrote the definitions and derivatives on the back of the card. I didn't think they would like this porgram, but we did it together first thing everyday (except co-op day) after prayers and Latin response practice, and they loved it!

We made our own cards too. But we still haven't used them the way they suggested. My high schooler now writes a list of words in her notebook for each root. When we get back home what I'm planning to do is put a root each week on the fridge or wall plus a list of words and study them that way.

This is what we are doing. Before we started putting things on the fridge, we just kept a bunch in the little basket where our salt/pepper and napkins went, and we like to look through them during dinner once a week or so. I would add a new one every week or two. Now we have one on the fridge at all times and the rest that we have learned in the packet on the kitchen table. (we are making our own)

We are also going to make our own and stick them up on our "fridgeschooling" whiteboard. I will put up a few each week related to our science studies. I have not figured out what we will do with them once they come off the board. I am thinking of maybe a binder of some sort. Or I may just stick them up around the window and door frames in the schoolroom.

A MODG suggestion is to keep a memory bag - a ziplock bag with items for memorization: A few Latin/Greek cards, parts of a poem, phonograms, math facts.
The memory bag can be kept in the car or at home.

In third grade MODG suggests these cards. Their suggestion is to introduce three new cards a week, quickly review them each day (four days a week schedule.) Each week add three new cards and then review the last three from the previous week. This continues until the student reaches 13 cards. You would only review a maximum of 13 cards a week.

This breakdown is very doable. My kids like the weekly planners that MODG offers. (The school offers the planners for the first time with the Third Grade.) I think the excitement of the planner with a check off box and the ease of studying the Greek and Latin cards 3 a week, have helped two of my children go through most of the cards.

Putting the cards on the refrigerator and on the table are very good ideas as well.

Theresa, I just had to laugh! We're setting up our new house, and I told Bill that my decorating style is "Early Childhood Education."    Besides the tree and a couple of mini chalkboards, we have a 30 ft timeline which goes through the living room, dining room and down the hallway. My inspiration is Frank Gilbreth.

Helen, I'm so grateful you posted. We're only in 2nd with MODG, but I bought the book for later in the year when we finish Sound Beginnings.   I think the bag will work well for us, but I may cheat and just buy the cards.

Personally, I think the cards suffice. I bought both and never cracked open the book. Well, actually I loaned the book and never got it back. But I never thought I was missing anything without the book.

I think we are actually not going to use the book, either. I will do the cards in the style they recommend, but I have found so many root word lists online (for free) that I have decided to save the bucks. Besides, I would have to go out of the book's order and supplement anyways, because I want to tie the roots we study to our science studies. I kind of feel I wouldn't use the book.

Just an idea to share.......

When we were using English From the Roots Up (which we'll continue this year), I was doing the cards by myself, adding the green or red border. It drove me crazy! So I bought the cards.

BUT.......later on, I had bright idea that if we were to make our own again (which I may have the kids do again) in order for them to understand it better themselves, we would use RED (or pinkish) index cards for the Latin roots, and GREEN index cards for the Greek roots, rather than making our own with borders.

I also like the idea of using a notebook, and making their lists in those. Maybe if we do that, the kids will write the root at the top of the page, then in red or green magic marker, can draw a red box around Latin roots, and a green box around the Greek roots.

I love English From the Roots Up!

I had this thought today too because we were doing index cards with phonograms, but I just don't have enough walls for all that. So we could start with phonograms and then continue with roots. We picked one book that was a read aloud for several weeks, where the kids played sleuths as I read and found the words with the phonogram we were looking for so I could put it on a list. I think the notebooks will keep all that fun more organized.

I had gotten the same advice about just buying the cards, but I never got to look at either book or cards in person before I bought so I guessed that I would like the book better since I wouldn't lose any of the pages. Maybe I should have listened.

I think that might work best for us.
It's my 3rd grader's first year using it.
