Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am still stuck on how to proceed with spelling in the fall. My kids will be in 8th, 4th, 2nd, and 1st.

I did prepared dictation with my 8th grader for 3 years. He didn't like it at all and he didn't retain words that he had previously "learned". I hesitate to try it with my rising 4th grader because his actual letter formation is still slow.

My 8th grader, even though he is a good reader, struggles with spelling. (I don't know if he doesn't know how to spell some words or if it's just laziness, but when he writes words on paper I'm surprised at the number of errors. I think he's come to rely on spell check when he does written narrations and essays).

I think what would really work best for me is a rules-based spelling program that I can use with each child at their own level. I need something that has low parent-involvement since I have four kids. Suggestions?

I wish there was a place for me to see lots of spelling curricula so I can find one that would suit us best. I've looked at Cathy Duffy reviews and am interested in hearing more about:

-All About Spelling: would this work for multiple ages? It seems like it would be a large investment for four kids, and it seems a little parent-intense.

-Spelling U See: good reviews on Cathy Duffy, but seems like lots of worksheets, which would not appeal to my boys at all.

-Building Spelling Skills (Christian Liberty Press):   basic, low cost, great reviews on Amazon, but not as well-known

Any suggestions? Experience with these programs? Other spelling program you can recommend? This is one area that I'd like to focus on, especially with my older two, this fall.

I've never used it, but what about Phonetic Zoo for your older two. It is rules based and designed to be used independently.

I love AAS but I find it easier to start this with younger kids. Others may have experience using it with older ones. Some of my kids use Phonetic Zoo and like it. It is completely hands off for me but I don't really know how they are doing either.

Avko's Sequential Spelling is patterned based rather than rule based but it very low key (10 minutes max per session). I have seen good results with it.

We use sequential spelling here. I have only one child who occasionally wants to know the rules, so then we look it up in Logic of English or some other resource. I like sequential spelling quite a lot and we really struggled with trying to teach it to my kids, the older two are dyslexic.
We tried several different programs, but sequential spelling was simple enough for me to do with all three of them, and didn't take a ton of time.

I am interested in Sequential Spelling but at the link above I notice there is a Teacher's book, a student book and a DVD. Are all these components necessary?

Editing to add, how do I know which level to start my child at? He's an older student who still struggles terribly with spelling (8th grade).

For our child who did not generally do well at spelling when writing things like letters, paragraphs, etc. we have always come back to CHCs spelling program. She likes them the most, and they require very little parental involvement. Oh, and they focus on the rules of spelling, too.
I feel it is a well rounded spelling program, with just enough, but not too much requirements. I think you can view sample pages online now, too. Another plus is they are much cheaper than the bigger programs like AAS.

The teachers book (for seq. spell)is all I have. You just dictate from the list. My kids use a regular notebook to write the words.

I would start everyone in the first book. It isn't like a typical spelling book, which would contain very easy words. For example, Day 5 words are:
Thinned
Thinner
Sinner
Spinner
Fins
Mr. Skinner
Winner
Be
Inning
Beginning
Chinned
We
Wee
Bee
See
Trees
Free
Agree
Disagree
Fees

That's good to know. Thanks Aagot!

Pilgrim, I agree about the CHC books. I'm starting my 2nd and 5th graders in those. I just needed something a little more for my 8th grader.

We also use sequential spelling.

The immediate feedback and lack of standard spelling tests has done wonders for my children's confidence.
