I'm sure there must be a topic on this somewhere, but I'm not sure how to find it.
DS7 can almost read chapter books, but all the words on the page are overwhelming for him. Easy readers are too easy. Anyone have suggestions for some quality books for him to read? He likes danger, action, and mystery, so my choices of "Frog and Toad" and the like don't really appeal to him. 
A librarian suggested Three Terrible Trins. The reading level was great, the content was NOT. New words he knows now from reading that book: Hangover, boozer, sober, and "the evils of alcohol." There were also several passages with female mice gossiping about their friend "lodging" with a male mouse without being married. Not exactly what I was looking for. I didn't think I would have to pre-read books for my 7YO. 
Anyone have suggestions for a younger reader?

Can he read short chapter books?
If so I was thinking the Battle Boy series and Magic Tree House books. Lots of action, mystery, danger and history there.

Consider comic books.
The ratio of text to pics is great for early readers,and the vocab can be anywhere from simple to complex, depending on the comics you choose. There are some great ones out there these days, though oldies but goodies like Tin Tin, Asterix, and Calvin and Hobbes get credit here for transitioning my daughter from early readers to chapter books.

My emerging readers seem to really like the Magic Treehouse books and Tin Tin (graphic novels)

Tin Tin! Also, my kids really enjoyed Nate the Great. They are quirky enough that they don't feel dumbed down.
