Can anyone give me a comparison between the American Cardinal Readers, Catholic National Readers and the Faith and Freedom readers? I have two boys that I will be homeschooling next year for the first time(K and 2nd) and would like to use Catholic readers for reading practice but I am not sure which one and I would rather not buy all three to decide  They will be used in conjunction with OPGTR to cover phonics if that plays into which one to pick. So if there are pros/cons to any of them or if there are in depth reviews on them if you could point me in that direction I would be grateful. Thanks!

Take a look at the Love 2 Learn site. The description of the Catholic National Reader has links to the other two.
In our house, we like the American Cardinal Readers and Faith and Freedom Readers. The American Cardinal Readers have more "real" literature. However, the Catholic National Reader sometimes appeals more to boys, especially in the higher grades because of the literature selections (military leaders, great speeches, etc.).

I want to put in a plug for Catholic Heritage's Little Stories for Little Folks reading series.
After the little stories readers, you get into the Devotional Stories for LIttle Folks reader, and both my dc have *loved* those stories, which are about a homeschooling family. Who doesn't love Greg, or have a Greg, or know a Greg?
I have also used the Faith and Freedom series for additional reading, and they are good- just written in a different time.

My daughter loves the Faith and Freedom readers. We tried many readers before that; they were the first ones she really wanted to try to read (she's a struggling reader who is gradually getting better). The artwork really appealed to her, so different than the artwork in secular reading textbooks.

My son (now 10) really had an antipathy to the American Cardinal Readers, for reasons I can't quite fathom; my now-9-year-old daughter liked them early on. My son did really, really love the "Little Folks" books -- not the phonics readers so much as "Bigger Stories" and, to a lesser degree, "Devotional Stories." From there we dove off into "real" books and never looked back.
*I* like the selections in the American Cardinal Readers quite a lot. Our church actually has the whole set, and I borrowed them, which is how we came to try them out. We've never used the Catholic National Readers or Faith and Freedom, so can't offer a real comparison, alas.

Have only experience with the Faith and Freedom, very sweet. For me in part there is an emotional connection, I taught my brother (now 30) to read with these, and in turn all of my children have used them for a time, we never seem to make it past book P and 1, however I have found them very helpful in filling that gap. The bridge between the basic phonic readers we use and real books.

It looks like its a personal preference thing then. I may need to get my reader to look at the samples and see which one appeals to him the most and go from there. Thanks!

We have used CHC Little Stories and Devotional Stories, Little Angel Readers, and Faith and Freedom readers. We have enjoyed all of them immensely. They are all very sweet catholic stories. The biggest difference that I would say among all of them is that the Faith and Freedom Readers are older and the stories are set in the 50's. so they would compare better with the American Cardinal and Catholic National Readers. Seton has reprinted the F&F readers in color so that is a difference among that group. I prefer the stories in the F&F readers to the ACR and CNR. The early elementary levels have more family based stories that are really sweet.
