Hi Kristin, I'm using it with my six and five year old boys. There are some old threads about it; here and here. I'll be back and glad to answer specific questions, if you have any, I have to go get breakfast ready though

Kristinannie,
My detailed post is in the first link Jenny provided.
We never finished the program. By the time we got to the second reading selection/poem, not only did my dd detest reading...I did as well.
It pains me to say that because I love Lanaya dearly!
To this day, I have still not finished cutting out all. the . little. squares.
We just did readers and finished the CHC Little Stories for Little Folks series...and then this fall moved into All About Spelling...which, really does teach "reading" in a way...
However, as I emphasized in my post, it is all about learning style.
Though, it is interesting to note that I have not seen ANY glowing reviews of Delightful Reading anywhere?

I think Maggie is right, learning to read and how you go about it comes down to learning styles.
I think one of the reasons there might not be glowing reviews for Delightful Reading is that, IMO, it really targets getting the parent to understand the CM way of teaching reading. Let me try to explain my experience:
1. If you have not read the original CM works, the teachers manual is an excellent source to walk you through the method. There are specific quotes from the original works. Now that I've read the first volume completely I can clearly see that manual comes straight from her writing and methods; it just targets that area and explains it very well.
2. The teacher's manual breaks up the different stages of learning to read. i.e. learn letters first, then sounds, blend a little with word families, introduce sight words, finally reading and learning word families at the same time by using actual literature selections.
3. Once you get to the final section there are a few chosen selections for this process. Again, IMO, it is about learning the method, not necessarily following their selections. I went through the first selection, "Rain", and have not used the others provided. BUT, I have used the process with other reading selections from our current readers. For example we are reading from Frog and Toad Treausury so when my first grader runs into a new word, that word gets treated just like described in the book and added to his Word Book (one word will lead him to learn in similar ones). Sight words continue to be added.
4. All the little tiles can be tedious to cut and organize but once you do it you have a very nice set of letters & words to use (even if you don't use the selections provided). I backed all of them with magnetic tape and use our magnetic stand up board with them.
5. My five year old is on the third step so we are using our word book and working through short family word sets, constant review, and after 3 or 4 sets I introduce 4-5 sight words. I'm using simple readers (like Bob books) with him to reinforce. He loves adding to his word book (comes with the kit, a simple spiral bound blank page notebook).
6. My three year old is on the first few stages: learning letters and sounds. We've used suggestions from the manual and I fell in love with the LEAP Frog Letter Factory dvd.
7. Now, this does not teach phonics. I highly recommend getting something like the ABC's of and All Their Tricks by Margaret M Bishop so that you are familiar with them. This helps when you come across a word and you want to introduce a rule or trick. For example: you are reading along and you run into "read" , when there are two vowels together usually the first one says it's name and the second stays silent. Everytime we run into this I say remember when to vowels are together....
8. This process can be great because you really cater to your child by picking what you read and how fast you go. It can also seem a little overwhelming for mom because, well, it is not written to introduce/teach a phonics program. It is a very relaxed natural way of teaching your child to use rules, tricks and sight by the practice of just reading.
9. Last, the more reading practice you have the better it gets. We have read aloud time with mom every day. It started out with one paragraph that would take the whole fifteen minutes to get through and now we are at about 5 pages with a little bit of trouble.
Very long, but I really wanted to come and give you some main thoughts about the kit and simply the process of teaching reading the CM way as I see it and have been using. I hope this helps a bit

Thanks, Jenny. I am pretty happy with my son's progress. He learns phonics basically during reading lessons and using the the Struggling Reader games. We will occaisionally do Explode the Code, but he really hates workbooks. I am very happy with our readers (MCP readers and Little Stories for Little Folks). He is also starting to read more real books which is making him really excited. I just love this way of teaching new sight words that we come upon instead of me just telling him what they are. I really don't think I will use the program as laid out either, but just use the tiles and book to write down his new words and to learn related words. It doesn't cost much so I can justify it I guess. Also, I really like the prereading stuff that I could use with DD4. Thanks so much for your response. I am seriously considering getting this mostly for the method. I am that kind of a homeschooler anyway which is why I love the idea of Bravewriter.
