Hello, I am a 1st year HSing Mommy. My 2nd grader had been using Little Angel Readers and Workbooks, but we need more help with phonics rules (to improve spelling and sounding out). I did NOT learn phonics and am a terrible speller. I really like the look of CHC Speller A, etc. But,I am wondering if it is through enough. I need the rules right there in plain sight for Mom. And I don't want teachers manual. She loves workbooks and readers. She reads well- just finished Desperaux, but skips words she doesn't know, when reading independently.
She also has nearly completed Voyages in English 1st grade book (secular version). So, do I switch to CHC for the speller, readers and grammar books? Or keep going with Voyages (which I love!) and just use the readers and Speller A from CHC. OR is there a website I could use instead for phonics and spelling? Something that would test her and place her in the right level and keep her practicing until she had mastered any given phonics rule?
Sorry this is long and probably been asked before... I feel like I've been on a hamster wheel and...well you ladies are such a blessing! I could use someone to pat me on the back and tell me it'll all be ok. sigh. Thanks all!

What about Modern Curriculum Press Plaid Phonics books? They're inexpensive and they seem to work well with just about any reading program.
I don't see why you can't stick with Voyages in English if you enjoy it!

At the second grade CHC's reading, grammar and spelling are for the most part independent of each other. The grade one readers, handwriting and spelling support each other but each segment can be used separately.
I love the stories in CHC's second grade readers but I've found that they are too advanced for shaky readers. We've mostly used them as devotionals and for listening practice. The kindergarten/grade one readers are the ones with a phonics focus.
My children like the spellers but while they are phonically based they are not set up to clearly teach 'the rules' of phonics. There are clearer spelling programs out there.

Sounds exactly like Explode the Code Online. I think it is a great program. Have been using it for a few years with dd very successfully.

All About Spelling by Marie Rippel might be worth a look, too. Its not online but is definitely a phonics-based spelling program.
I've not used the entire program as a spelling program, but we are using (and I like) the Phonogram CD-ROM and Phonogram flashcards. I've been using them for my late reader, having finally figured out that approaching reading through spelling is a better fit for him.
I second Explode the Code, as well.

This is the program I have been looking for for the past 14years! I am absolutely 100% supportive of AAS!! currently halfway through book 3 with my teenagers (needed revision) and halfway through book 1 with my dd7 and ds5.  Yes mamma needs to be there, but it is thorough, explains the rules, totally makes sense and is teacher friendly.

Thank you for all the wonderful information! I have looked over the items you all suggested.
It seems that All About Spelling is very complete! But, I need simple at the moment! CHC still looks good, but perhaps not complete enough. So, I looked at MCP Plaid Phonics and Spelling Workout and it sounds like what I need...phonics rules right in the workbook and no teachers manual needed.
Any comments on MCP's Plaid Phonics or Spelling workout B? I am guessing I should use Level B in both workbooks? Thanks again.

Forgot to say- I looked at Explode the Code again and the on-line version seems to simplistic for Rachel. Maybe for my son at the end of K this Spring. Both CHC and Explode the Code look good- I just don't think they are through when it comes to going over the rules. And I did have Rachel "test drive" ETC on-line, she enjoyed it, but didn't seem to be learning much.

A little late, but I wanted to tell you that we've used MCP Plaid Phonics Levels K-C for all of the children for many years and have had great success. Level B is easy to understand and if your 2nd grader is reading, she could do most by herself. It is simple and colorful and I really like it.
My 6th child is using ETC this year for kindergarten because I was given many levels for free. I like it, too, and it seems quite similar but without the color. :)
