I have been searching the archives and reading about "slow reading" and making connections. I am still trying to figure it all out. Today, dd10 made a connection, and I was wondering what to do about it. I was reading to both girls from a book about John Smith's life before Jamestown. dd10 commented that it sounded like Odysseus. I said something like, "Very interesting," and continued reading. Now, when we finish the book, do I give her the option of narrating a comparison of Odysseus and John Smith, or something , or will she think, "I should have kept my mouth shut because Mommie turns everything into an assignment?"

Wow! That's fantastic, Michele!!

What to do? Well, the good news is....you don't HAVE TO DO anything! The connection was for your daughter to make! And she did!!! That is so interesting that she made that connection! Now, you certainly could ask her in what way she thought John Smith was like Odysseus. I certainly would! She doesn't have to "narrate" that....don't think anything formal....and don't overthink this....just think of it as a natural conversation, something that you're naturally curious about. (I would be! Naturally curious, I mean! )

A connection isn't something you have to do something about...or with. It simply happens naturally as a part of a person's education. They begin to cross-connect, on their own, and often they let you know about these through their narrations (the telling back of their reading for the day). It's as simple as that!

Thanks for the encouragement! I am having trouble with the idea of natural conversations and oral narrations being...official. I keep feeling like I need everything written and popped into the notebook, not that I have to keep a portfolio for legal reasons. Do you say, "there are x amount of narrations today; you may choose x number oral and x number written?" Do you check "oral narration" off the list for a "natural" conversation or discussion and the child may not even realize they have done an official narration? Thank you from a woman trying to loosen her grip on her "official lists" without loosening her grip on sanity!

Ditto Jen , it was hard to not want to jump on these moments at first and not over analyze (especially with my oldest). But, they are their connections and they are building relationships with their reading which will continue to flourish in their education; if just left alone.

I love when my children do this. And more often than not I am curious. I'll just ask them to explain because I don't know , they are always more than willing to explain their connections to me. The trail you hear about is always as amazing as the original narration.

It makes me smile to know they are learning and making those connections. Good job Michele, enjoy!!
