I know there are plenty of threads (I've read them before) but it's late, my eyes are verrry tired from searching and being on computer and my search results aren't coming up with anything. Sooo...can anyone send the links from previous talks about setting up your own home library. In particular right now, I'm looking for how to keep the books recorded in a computer program. I thought about just doing an excel spreadsheet with author's name and title and genre. ??!
Thanks,

what I have done is during the summer in an excel sheet wrote out all the books I had by category and then guestimated how to store. and then used a color coding system so my son who cannot read big words yet can help keep it organized. so I have a lot of literature/pre-readers/readers. So I purchased 2 milk crates of the same color (lets say blue) and then I filled it up with all the literature/pre-readers/readers and marked them all with star stickers (let's say silver or something that would show up and also on the crate itself) and make sure that the crates are sturdy and stackable. Try office max.
Then I did the same for religion since I had enough to fill 2 milk crates I did the same thing but I used white crates and blue star stickers so my son knows where everything goes. Again I have it all organized this way as well on the excel sheet as well.
And so on I have 2 crates (brown) for science and I use like gold star stickers.
And then I have a small book case that holds the various smaller collection of books I have, like music, math, etc. etc. I hope this helps! I love the system.
Last yr it was all for a reader to organize and everything was a mess by years end.
I also have on the wall a quick reference guide for my husband and I to find where each subject is on the shelf or crate, etc. Its great so far but it is only about 1 month old.

here's a search that pulled up some threads like what you're looking for.. like the "book cateloging software" one.

It's the best!!! After the initial, affordable, one-time fee, you can catalogue as many books as you want. If you know other people on there, you can also peruse their bookshelves in a virtual sense also which could help in sharing materials or getting ideas etc.
I love the "tagging" system. I can look up my tags on "American Revolution" "Egypt" or "astronomy" or whathaveyou, and it'll show me every book we have which I've tagged with those terms. So great for planning different units.

Some more links where we discuss Readerware, my favourite book cataloguing program.

Have I asked this question before? I know there are applications for smart phones to scan the ISBN. I was looking for something that I could scan and add to a database or table or spreadsheet, and could also check to make sure it's not a duplicate.
Still have a problem with non-ISBN # books...but looking for something to start. One of my problems now is I keep buying duplicates.

So it looks like Readerware and Librarything are the top 2 from even reading old posts.
Questions: Is there any BIG difference betw. the 2? Does either allow you to put in the condition of your book? (excellent, want to replace etc.)
Does either allow you to put in the location of where the book is within your home? (ex: upstairs, schoolroom etc.)
I'm getting to where I'm buying duplicate books too and so I've got to get a system where I can SEE what I have more easily.

The biggest difference for me/deciding factor was that I could only enter 2000 books into Librarything, as I'm now well over that I'm very pleased I bought Readerware. I'm also unsure as to whether librarything had all the features that Readerware has.
Readerware does allow you to put in your book's location (I can also enter when I lend out to friends and to whom) and allows for condition too. I can also enter the amount of copies of the same book.
Still know of no short cut with non-isbn books.
