Any suggestions as we end the year??? My daughter, 11 yo finishing 5th grade, is behind in reading comprehension and vocabulary. We use Seton, but somehow it is not clicking for her.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

We've used the Vocabulary Workshop series this year and my dd loves it. There's some comprehension in each book, although the main focus is vocab.

how is her reading skill? if she's having to focus on the process of reading.. then it's harder to manage to pay attention to what's being said.

If this is the case then backing up and doing some extra practise with simpler things and rebuilding slowly could help..

it could also be tracking.. if she's struggling to keep on the right line, keep the words lined up.. then again she'll be paying less attention to what the words are saying. This could be helped by something as simple as laying a blank piece of paper (just a strip will do) under the line she's reading.

is the comprehension problem from the vocabulary problem? if she reads something that she knows all the words is her comprehension good? Then working on the vocabulary would be good with something like Nancy mentions.

Is she not getting the vocabulary because she's not comprehending what she's reading.. maybe she just needs to slow down and back up a bit.. go to simpler and shorter bits to work on comprehension and then rebuild from there once she's got some confidence in what she's doing.
