Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been using CLE LA and Reading.

I'm ok continuing with LA, but not so much with the reading.

Here is what I love about the reading program:
- vocabulary building
- word study
- dictionary respelling(how to use dictionary to learn to say a word)
   - comprehension questions.

What I like about the LA:
- Includes spelling, grammar, and how to use a reference book.
- encourages independent work
- sentence diagramming

What I don't like about the reading program - their worldview and doctrine is very strong in it.

What I don't like about the LA - it could be improved upon as a Catholic worldview..lol. But really their doctrine isn't nearly as prominent, more of a general, gentle Christian view.

NOW, is there anything out there that would compare? I am content with most content, but LA I'm not there yet.

We've been using components of CLE as well (inc. reading, LA and math); and a good friend of mine uses it for almost all subjects (including Bible! yes, this family is Catholic).

I've not had any issue with the reading program regarding anti-Catholic doctrine (I may have missed it if there was anything thus far); the social studies I won't touch with a 500 foot pole (but I'm super picky anyway and won't touch most social studies curricula!). I've had more issue with the math books having the different number of Bible books than I've had with the LA and reading. What is it that you've found in the reading?

With that said, we are primarily Montessorians and use the CLE only here and there. For reading and LA, we have also done American Cardinal Readers, the Montessori materials for both subjects, and Catholic Heritage Curricula's reading and reading comprehension.

It's not anything I've found negative per say. Perhaps its comes across as literal interpretation of everything, rather than a literary interpretation that I've been taught, or would have taken.

My kids are also starting RCIC in the fall, so I would prefer something Catholic more so than anything else.

You make two good points - and they both make sense

How old are your children? If younger, they would likely get a lot out of Big/Bigger Stories for Little Folks from CHC. Also the American Cardinal Readers seem to correlate decently (nothing is perfect of course) with the CLE readers, as far as reading ability, expected comprehension level. Their older reading program is geared directly towards reading comprehension, via reading the lives of the saints.

I have to say, I've not seen the dictionary focus in any other curriculum at the young age that CLE uses it - so your children will be ahead of the game in that regard no matter what you use.

For language arts, I'm even less of a help. We've browsed but not used the CHC LA books - the CLE ones were given for free, so that was a huge push that direction for us; otherwise I would have loved to give the CHC ones a try. They seem solidly Catholic and easy to work with, and include the items you listed above.

We'll pray for you!

The 2 I'm seeking curriculum for are going into grade 3 and grade 7. My grade 9 just informed she likes the school board curricula for LA well enough to stick with it(Catholic board), so that is one subject off the table :) She would like something different for Science and Social studies :) But LA is fine
