Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If I get to hs this fall it will be my first year. Are the teacher's guides needed? My dd will be in second grade and I'm not sure what level to start with either... Help?

I bought the teacher's guide for Books 1&2 and never used it. The books are pretty self explanatory. My son (Kindergarten) is now finishing book 2. Is your daughter reading already?

Yes, she is a very good reader actually. I mark all her books using AR Bookfinder. Her school marks their books this way. She reads into a third grade level according to the AR system. Here is an example of a book she has read.

I had thought I should start with ETC book 3, but it sounds like I need a higher one...

Yes, I think you are probably right. Here is the description of book 3

" one-syllable words ending in a long vowel, including -y; silent e words; diagraphs sh, th, wh, ch, ng, ck: trigraph tch; ee-ea, ai-ay, oa-ow"

This is from the back of my son's book. I couldn't find the descriptions online anywhere. Maybe someone else knows. Otherwise, let me know and I'll type of the descriptions for the next couple of books too so you can see which might be the best fit.

hope this helps.

My son is in a 2nd/3rd combo year and he did book 4 and is now in book 5. Lesson 1 of Book 5 starts out with -ed words:

listed
heated
painted
trotted
talented
inspected

Typical sentences from Lesson 1 are:
"The silly player batted with a twisted tail pipe."

"The twins hunted in the mist, trying to locate the hidden cave."

We've used all the ETC books up to this point and have never needed the teacher books.
