The last thing I need is yet another reading program, but just for the sake of research  , what do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of Delightful Reading and AAR?

Not to add confusion or even more options, but I was looking at the new IEW reading program alongside those 2. I would love to hear opinions, too

Oh, wow. I hadn't heard about the IEW program! Yes, I'm interested to know about that one too! From first glance it sounds like they use poetry to teach reading?
ETA - After looking a little more carefully, It seems that the IEW program was actually designed for a classroom situation. It includes lots of games in the early stages. I like that poetry is included. That's one of the things that I like about the CM method of teaching children to read described here. I have to admit, because I've yet to read CM's original writings, I'm not even sure that this is how she taught reading. I like the method though. It also appeals to my ds who was not enjoying any of the readers we've been struggling through.
I'm not sure I like all the games included in the IEW program though. I guess I'm not a game person. I purchased Happy Phonics years ago and eventually sold it because we just never got to it.
I haven't looked into AAR very closely. I know we like AAS for spelling and phonics, which is why I was considering it.
I think I like Delightful Reading the best so far.

Looking into it briefly, it almost seems to me that the All About Reading program would precede the IEW one. I don't know much about the Delightful Reading.

Becky, I'm not familiar with the IEW or AAR but I have been reading through The Delightful Reading manual. So far Part 1 was completely devoted to telling you about Charlotte Mason on Teaching Reading. Then Part 2 and forward is about how to teach reading. I started teaching my ds in this method before getting this kit so I can see from reading this book that we are following a CM path of a combination phonics and sight words.
First you have to let them play (get used to the letters) with the alphabet. Once they know the letters you go to the next step.
Second start teaching letter sounds.
Third you start making word combinations. The kit provides you with many word tiles, which you cut. You start with short vowel sounds then move to long vowel sounds. Some blends can also be introduced. This step can take several weeks as the goal is to build their word bank. (I also introduced some sight words during this process)
Now we get to the Reading Lessons (which is where we are). They provide you with a reader book to go through. A poem, Aesop Fable, Proverb and a Letter. Instructions follow in a Lesson format.
That is about all I can tell you about the kit so far. By the time I figured out what I wanted to do with my younger kids I didn't want to buy a full program so I just created my own word list cards and started doing the word build up and reading through some poems in the efforts to follow a CM style (we spent the previous year just learning our alphabet and letter sounds). I can see that we were doing the steps just as the book does and I have to say I'm very pleased with my son's progress, he is starting to read on his own and we still have more than 3 months to go in our school year. (we are going through the letter recognition and alphabet sound part with my 4 & 3 yr olds.)
I should also disclose that before starting the letter combination part (back in August) we did go through the first 10 Lessons in "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons". He caught on to how to blend the letters very quickly. Before this kit we were using the McGuffey Primer as our reader as well.
Hope this helps just a bit at least for the Delightful Reading kit

Thanks Jenny. Could you say then, that if I have all the good information in this series of articles and a willingness to find my own poems, fables or Proverbs as well as cut up letter cards myself, I wouldn't need the Delightful Reading manual?
My son really does will with this sort of reading instruction. He is in 1st and had been struggling, but he finds this enjoyable and so he's willing to devote more attention to it I think. Anyway, I'm wondering if having Delightful Reading will actually help me to teach him better, or if it will just be more stuff on my shelf?

Becky, I'm having a hard time giving you an answer. One because I've personally really enjoyed reading through the first part and of course because what I've done so far has been reaffirmed. Besides being a tool for the of rest our teaching reading journey, I find it to be a great resource about a CM method that is new to me and will be using with my youngest four. For example, the idea that you do a lot of word building before the actual reading. The more familiar the child is with the letter combinations the easier reading will be.
Now, yes I very much think you can do this without the kit. I created my own index cards with say "at" in big letters on one side and then all the word combinations on the other. While we weren't keeping a word journal (like the one in the kit) we were/are recording all the new sight words we are learning. One of our doors near our learning area has been painted in Chalk paint and the top half say "sight words". In color chalks we put them there and there they have stayed as a constant visual and for review. The bottom part has been used to write our word families when we learn/review them. Of course, we will be using the book to record these now (just for extra practice). Another thing about the reader that comes in the kit is that it has more sentences to practice along with each lesson, this is why we were using the McGuffey Primer (more practice), which my son likes and will keep reading through.
I hope this doesn't sound to undecisive. I liked purchasing it because it is all there for me to understand and reference, but I can see how I might pick a different poem or fable depending on the child in the future. Again, it's been helpful in making the method clearer for this novice  .

Thanks Jenny. That is helpful. I really like your chalk painted door idea too! 
I think I'm going to put Delightful Reading on my wish list, but if I can continue to teach my 1st grader effectively without it, I'll just keep doing what I'm doing. It's hard for me to resist buying new curriculum though!!

Your reviews have been very helpful to me as well as I've been reading along! Thanks!!! We have a unique blend of relaxed unschooly almost approach to reading with some phonics through CHC readers and the Little Angel Readers, both of which we enjoy in different ways along the road to reading. It works well for us, and though I wasn't really tempted to purchase the new SCM program - wow! It does look fantastic! Wish it had been around a few years ago when I started - I probably would have jumped on it! I did really appreciate hearing your thoughts on the program! Very helpful review!
AND....I LOVE that fantastic idea of using your chalkboard to write the sight words to keep them in plain view in a common area! I'm definitely thinking more on that one!

Becky, I had to come back and mention something we started doing. I recently ended up with several wipe erase magnetic boards. So when we started part three of Delightful Reading and cut up all the little tiles of the poem "Rain" I used magnetic tape to back them and use the boards to place them on. Under each word we have been word building with the dry erase marker. Because my ds is still really getting the hang of writing I haven't started using the word notebook they provide but he is saying/seeing his word bank increase by what we write on the board. And I keep adding sight words to our door.

That sounds great Jenny. I keep wanting to buy Delightful Reading because my "homemade version" is working so well. But then, I'm afraid that if I buy it my ds will be beyond it in no time and I'll have spent money needlessly. It would really be nice to have it all planned out for me though! What level would you say it goes up to?

I think I started the other post because after you go through their four selections: going through each sentence/phrase, working on word building and rearranging the tiles (or new words created from the word building) to make new sentences you are done with the program. Part 3 Reading Lessons is the last section.
I think because I still have the younger three boys that will go through this it was a good investment for me. I just thought that our magnetic words might be a thought since you don't currently have the program. You can print your own words and add the tape or maybe buy something like this. Lot's of word rearranging possibilities with this kit at a quarter of the cost.
So I've been brainstorming on whats next. I just printed CM's original first volume to give me more inspiration (and rereading some valuable old threads), but from what I can see from this point you're moving on to the basic reading practice, read alouds, copywork and some narration.
