Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Sorry that subject wasn't clear, I couldn't fit it all in!

I'm really bad at asking questions to my children when reading to get them involved in the book (ask my teachers, I was also bad at answering them ) My kids are 7, 5, and 2, so we do a combination of picture books and chapter books. But all I do is read - which they love; however I'm not getting them to *think* and conjecture like I'd like them to (at least my oldest). Because I just don't seem to think this way, I need a list I can have with me (or memorize) to get us started in "taking apart" a book instead of just sitting there with it.

Any thoughts or links about this would be much appreciated!

Amy

Amy go take a nap. You deserve it.

Then just read and enjoy the books. Snuggle, read, snuggle again and then put the book on your coffee table to be enjoyed (paged through) when you're not around.

Don't manufacture questions. Live you life.

If the kids love a story, they might act it out or make lego characters from the tale. Your seven and five year old might enjoy making popsicle stick puppets to go with the story (if it's a really good one).

But mostly, read, read, read and don't feel you should get something out of it other than enjoyment. You'll be amazed at how much joy teaches.

They will naturally grow in their thinking skills if they are stimulated with wonderful materials and warm, open, loving (and rested ) parents.

Julie

I agree with Julie. Thes 7 year old is still very young.

Reading and enjoying books is so important. I think that the process of *thinking* about a book can naturally grow and mature out of the habit of narration. Once a child gets comfortable narrating (orally while you type), it is easier to ask for clarification or to ask them to expound in a natural way. -- You could re-read their narrations to them, pausing to ask an appropriate question or two along the way. ("Now why do you think so-and-so did that?") and even answering these questions yourself or just briefly sharing your own observations with your children. (sort of modeling thinking skills). Again, I agree with Julie and think that this should be done gently and not-too-frequently at first -- don't want to kill the love of a great book!
