Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have tried to you IEW: Style and Structure for 3 years now, and we have never really completed yet. I am not worried about my oldest boy because he is a natural writer. My 8th grader though--it's like pulling out teeth. I really need a program that thoroughly teaches every aspect of writing--not asking much, am I?

I am highly interested in WriteShop, but I haven't found many reviews of it.

Any opinions?

Thanks!

Beth

I like WriteShop. I used it for my oldest with pragmatic language difficulties. It was straight-forward, to the point, no nonsense, and for the most part, self-directed. We stretched it out so that one week he did the grammar exercises and the next he did the writing (not exactly the way it's explained in the book, but it worked for us well). Interestingly, the grammar found its way into the writing without even trying because it was fresh in his mind. So in writing a paragraph about a place, we had some colorful phrases that started with prepositions rather than the standard subject/predicate style he always had. I think focusing on one paragraph rather than two pages was a great way to keep the stress down and incorporate the new skills. I think my ds' writing has blossomed and I attribute it to WriteShop.

We used this several years ago with a child who, due to speech and language difficulties, was slow in developing writing skills. When we had arrived at senior year of high school and she still had trouble getting started on essay assignments, this was just the ticket to get her going. It seems to me that you can use this for almost any year of middle or high school. By its nature it is quite adaptable to various levels. The child who needed this kind of basic approach in 12th grade graduated from University of Maryland 4 years later magna cum laude, so it must have provided a good foundation.

Peace,
Nancy
