Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My son does very well on his weekly spelling tests. Recently we took the iowa test (standardized testing is required in our state). He scored low in spelling, most especially in words with affixes.

I'm thinking he memorizes the correct spellings for the test but doesn't really know how to spell.

Does anyone have any suggestions/spelling curriculum etc. that might help with this problem?

Jenn,
I teach spelling through dictation exercises mostly. I had the same experience with my older child memorizing for a test when she was younger and 2 days later having no real clue how to spell a word from the spelling test. Making use of dictation exercises and providing plenty of good literature has made a huge difference in spelling skills.

There are a couple of threads I immediately thought of for you to read through and consider with this approach...

Teaching Suffixes, Prefixes, etc. - Mary Fifer offers some great ideas and wisdom for really digging into a dictation selection and breaking down the parts of words for understanding (but this is also very useful for spelling). Very helpful thread with lots of ideas.
Dictation for Spelling - Suzanne offers a great practical approach and mentions many really great resources to make this doable at home.

The great thing about this is that you really don't NEED to purchase anything. You probably have everything you need on your shelves right now. There are some great resources you could consider, but none of it is truly needed!

HTH!
