I can't understand why grammar, beyond good speaking and knowing how to use regular punctuation, and basic classes of word use (noun, adj, verb ect) is necessary for most people. I don't understand complicated stuff much longer than I have my sons page in fromt of me! I forget it soon, he forgets it soon....and I find myself thinking...what's the point?
A friend described it as a brain workout, and that is why grammar is good, and I have been holding onto that lifeboat for survival for a while now.
We were in VOE6, then switched to a program by LinguiSystems, which has "hipper" language, but is still only able to stay in my head for about 20 minutes..and gives NO help to the teacher other than the example when the going gets tough.
 i am ready to chuck grammar, but I know it is necessary for the well rounded individual.
so, why is grammar so improtant if you are not planning on being an editor?

Proper grammar is necessary for good writing. It also helps with foreign language study.
The main reason I would encourage anyone to study grammar is to enhance their job search possibilities later on. When 80 resumes come in the door for one job opening, employers tend to pick the very, very best ones for phone interviews. People who use bad grammar or have spelling errors on their resumes typically don't make the cut.

I think understanding grammar is also important for clarity of thought (and expression of and understanding the thoughts of others), much in the same way the study algebra helps one develop reasoning skills. Even though I don't presently remember how to do logarithms and would need a text in front of me to recall much about it, I don't feel that studying math was a waste.

Grammar never made sense to me in school.. BUT reading good books can give you the proper feel to know when something isn't right and then a good reference book on grammar lets you look up what you need.

This is my understanding too.
The formal study of grammar isn't necessary to do year after year though. Some families find it can still be effective to do a formal study every few years.
For our family we mostly study grammar informally and gently in the primary years, and are hitting a more systematic, formal approach in the high school years (Grades 7-12 here)
