Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am revisiting this topic again this yr.
ds8 really wishes to learn to read handwriting and so does his older brother who was a late bloomer to reading .
So my question once again is where does a mum find resources for handwritten material ?
Good stuff as well ?
For older children to read perhaps such as essays or articles in handwriting ?
For ds8 I have the babar books and I think the book Linnea in Monet's garden had handwritten sections did it not ? It has been at least 18 yrs since I read the book to dd
Any help on this would be great . Thanks a bunch .
Roxie

I'd recommend CHC's ebook Holy Papers for copywork.

As well as beautiful note pages, the Heart and Handwriting Quotes are both inspirational and written in both manuscript and cursive, and it's reusable.

I would think that a good place to look for books with cursive would be the art section, or the nature study section looking for books done in sketchbook style (sketches with notes added).

Rien Poortvliet is a dutch author with a number of books done in stetchbook style with cursive notes. My favorite of them is Dutch Treat. However this would only be for a mature child since the book is about many things ranging from the trials and tribulations of nature study to growing up in Holland during WWII (my maternal grandparents became young adults in Holland during WWII so this is part of why I love this book).

His book on Noah's ark is fascinating as he tries to figure out just how it would have been built. Again it's in sketchbook style with plenty of naturalist disgressions .

The books are out of print but are easy to find second-hand.

[btw while searching for Rien Poortvliet I found these slide shows videos of his art slikarja rien poortvliet Kommt und seht Gottes Sohn - Danny Janz - Karfreitag, Kreuzigung (the second is a slideshow depicting the Passion ).

Roxie,
I hope I'm understanding your question...are you looking for books with handwritten passages in it - so not all typeset?????

If so, can I recommend one of my absolute favorite all time books? You may already have it - The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden. This one is a diary of the year 1906, and contains all of Edith Holden's original handwritten notes. You can also find The Nature Notes of an Edwardian Lady, her diary for 1905, but for some reason her handwriting/penmanship is not included in this book. The good thing about both these books is that they are fairly common and can be found very inexpensively.

I was also thinking of reading some original, archived historical documents as ekbell suggests. I thought of linking you to a few I had bookmarked for history, but they're US history documents, and I know you're in Canada. I do think the library would be a good start. Generally they have an entire archived section that you might be able to poke through.

I've been seriously looking at the copywork/penmanship books that Queen Homeschool offers. The cursive writing in the books is drawn from art prints/picture study. I don't have them, so I can't really review them, but I've been considering them. Here is book B from which you can take a look at a sample. Actually, you can look at samples for all of the books. They're a family business with their phone and email on the site, you might be able to ask about paypal or another payment option.

Hope this helps. Good luck on your hunt.

Jennifer I do not mind American items at all , we are doing American history again this yr too mostly because I cannot get enough of it my poor boys they love world hostory and I just could stay on this continent forever when it comes to history .
I have the country diary it was my Gramma's copy , but not sure if the boys would get into it .
Do you like the Queens homeschool ? I'd asked about it before but then I now keep seeing copies used / new never used for sale and worry it is because they are not as good as they sound .
If you have links please please feel free to send them to me Jennifer .
Thanks so much , Roxie

I can't find my bookmark of archived original American documents, Roxie!    But, I did have a few more you might find interesting...

UK National Archives Treasures - you can view many, many original handwritten documents - for example, here is Jane Austen's will and Cook's First Voyage. This looks like a fun site to hunt around...but I'm not sure it fits your needs of reading handwriting...not all of these are perfectly legible.

So then, I had this idea...I make our own penmanship sheets, so why not make some that would fit whatever period of history you're studying, or poem, or literature, or whatever? You can make your own with several online options, but the writing wizard has a nice one - you can choose D'Nelian or Zaner Bloser style, cursive or print. Might be one idea for you.

I wish I could tell you more about Queen Homeschool. I don't have any experience with them beyond looking over their catalog. They offer a few things I'd like the try - the penmanship/copywork based on works of art is one of them.

How about starting up a correspondence with your child? With one of my children, I wrote a daily note in a small notebook (steno book works fine) and they wrote back to me. Just everyday "chit-chat" and sometimes I'd pop in a thought question, such as "What is your favorite zoo animal and why do you like it so much?" It was fun, easy, and provided writing, reading, and composition/journaling practice. Actually, it helped my handwriting, too, as I had to make sure it was legible!

Oh, that's a great idea, Caroline! I really like that! It would require me to be quite polished in my penmanship and the notes could be personal...."how is your lego creation going?..."what did you think of the Alabama/Kentucky football game this weekend?"

This would offer opportunities for reading in cursive, writing in cursive, and all in the context of notes from mom. I might set up a little mailbox for my 4th grader this weekend and start this!

Thanks for an inspiring idea!
