Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone heard of Open Court Phonics and Reading? I can't even be sure that I am getting an official webpage when I google...I am so confused.

I am only asking because I am pretty set on teaching my daughter to read using "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons," which seems to be the local home schooling community's top choice...

However, my mom flipped out. She has been a teacher for over 20 years.

She told me that I was taught using the "Open Court" Method. Funny thing...I remember my 1st grade phonics lessons really well...perhaps because it was "Real Learning" in a sense...each letter that was introduced had a lovely story to go with it so that you could remember the sound the letter makes...

Which is all I remember...but I don't want a bunch of other garbage either...

Which brings me to all of you who know far more about this than I.

In my short period of googling this, I found that it seems to be a government preferred reading program that schools are mandated to do because of certain grants...which sounds like a big red-flag to me.

Except that I loved those letter stories...

Any advice?

My next post will be "how do you explain to your mother (who was your literature teacher in Catholic school for 3 years) that you are doing something else"? If you only knew my mom.

God Bless,

When we first started homeschooling (about 21 years ago), one of the moms really recommended Open Court - but the older editions, not the newer ones. If you are really interested, I can try to pull up that old list of recommended stuff and try to give a specific title or date or something. I remember looking at them and the mom who recommended them was extremely conservative so I doubt these had anything fishy at all about them. I already had something I was using that was working, so I never purchased or used them. Cannot give you any first hand knowledge, though I could probably put you in touch with a mom who did use them.

Even if I knew what edition to use...it's so old...I wonder if those early editions would even exist?
