Do you teach your kids sight words? If so, where do you get the list and when do you start teaching them?
My 5 year old is reading simple CVC words. We have done the Letter of the Week program and are now doing some Explode the Code.
I am not sure what to do next. He's enjoying and doing well with ETC but has no interest in the very simple readers like Bob books.
Should I just keeping going w/ETC and leave it at that? Should I try to find a reader that interests him or teach him sight words?

Yep. We get our lists from the Jan Brett's website. They are the dolch word lists. I use the word lists to play bingo on. One book I've found useful in finding words/activities to learn sight words is Wow! I'm Reading!. There are some fun, game-like activities in there that we enjoy.

We play a lot of phonics bingo which has sight words as well as the word families etc... I use this because they love to play games and then I just wait until they are interested in a reader. I do keep trying to find a reader that this particular child likes. (They are all so different   )

My ds had difficulty learning to read. I used the Dolch word list for him. We did play some games, but in the end, I made flash cards and drilled him a bit each day. His reading comprehension is high, but part of his problem in learning to read is that he is not an interested reader.

I think it is interesting how trends in reading instruction are cyclical. When I was studying to be a teacher, phonics was big. Then, there was the Whole Language approach and more sight words were used. Now, it's back to phonics. I think the key is a combination of both. I teach my kids to read using phonics but make sure we do some sight word work as well. This helps with fluency in their reading and comprehension. I really like Jan Brett's web site that Jody posted above. I like Jan Brett's books and my kids recognize the characters on the things I print from there. Places like Lake Shore have lots of cute games and things for sight word drill, but making your own cards is alot cheaper and probably just as effective.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check out the dolch list. I don't know why I didn't think of something like Bingo, that's how we do math but never occurred to me to do it for this! :)

We have a bingo sight words game from Lakeshore, too.
I think it was somewhere on this board that a mom recommended Preschool Prep's Sight Words series. My kids love the videos and my 5yo's mind still works on it when they're done watching. This week he was looking at some words on a bag, picked out the 'g' from one word and the 'o' from another and told me that if you put them together it would make 'go'. They're always thinking, huh??

Definitely teach sight words. My ds(5) has loved the Meet the Sight Words videos. He taught himself how to read this year, and I am convinced that those videos helped him. They are very repetitive, but he loved them. Also, my dd did very well with the Now I'm Reading series by Nora Gaydos. They are more colorful than the Bob books with better "stories".
