Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was thinking of doing one of the above with my three older children - does anyone have any opinions on either? Would be be sufficient for grammar? WE did Easy Grammar (Boys did EG 4/5 and dd did EG Plus) - I just want to keep us ticking over on the grammar.

Thanks.

We LOVE Fix It. We REALLY didn't like EIC. I think it must be a personality thing. I've heard people say wonderful things about EIC. I'm not using it for Grammar. It does include things like punctuation, vocabulary, etc., but I wanted my dd (the one using it now) to have more in the way of grammar. It only takes a few minutes each day. One of the things she loves about it, is that it is an ongoing story and each day she gets to read the next part. She is currently doing the Tom Sawyer level. I love it because she will use it all the way up through 8th grade, a different story each year so it wont get boring. The price was good for 5-6 years of usage!

Thanks Becky. I have a couple of questions:

- is it a consumable or can I just buy one book for all the children?

- what ages do you use it for? I am hoping to use it for ages 10 and 13.

- do you supplement it with any other grammar?

thanks so much

You can buy one book. It comes with a CD so you can print off copies of all the selections that need to be edited for as many kids as you have.
My dd is the only one using it so far. She is doing 4th grade work and just turned 10. She will use it all the way up.
I do supplement with other grammar. I'm using Shurley English with her. I don't think Fix It has enough actual grammar instruction. It doesn't really cover parts of speech, mostly just things like mechanics, vocabulary, and good writing strategies from the writing workshops from IEW. In Fix It, he does refer to things like "dress ups" and "paragraph starters" but we haven't done IEW so I just skip that part. I think it is still good without all that, and I actually use the Fix It quotations instead of using other copywork. She writes the selection in it's corrected form. Hope this makes sense, I only had a few minutes online!

We love Fix It as well and tried and did not like EIC. I also love that it's a story.

The way we use it is my dc write one passage per day correctly, (there are 4 per week) and then on Friday I pick one and use it for dictation. So we use it as copywork/dictation as well as grammar instruction. It has really helped them find their own errors in their writing.

We also use IEW for writing and I love how Fix It refers to the stylistics techniques in IEW. It gives my dc great examples everyday to use in their writing.
I also have my dc to the vocabulary word each day orally.

We printed one book with all the stories in it, divided by red cardstock, for each child to use for the 5 years. We had it spiral bond with a clear plastic cover at Staples.

I'll be using it from 7th - 11th grade.

HTH!
