Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with one of Andrew Pudewa's seminars and wouold share that experience with me. My boys will be attending a morning class with him at the end of the month.

Recently I had been looking at TWSS and SWI and was put off by the price. I think I recall Elizabeth mentioning IEW as something she liked, though, and I was thrilled to hear that this seminar opportunity woiuld be available to us.

The cost of the seminar is only $15 per child for each to receive 2 hours of instruction directly from Mr Pudewa! You can imagine that I feel a sense of relief to get to try before I have to buy.

I'd love more information from those who have used this program.

Sarah, I was just coming on here to ask about TWSS and SWI when I saw your thread! How did your boys like the seminar?

I have TWSS and honestly have never quite gotten very far with it. My topic was going to be entitled "Tell me why you love IEW!"

I would love those who have had success with it to tell me how they use it and integrate it into their curriculum.

The seminar was yesterday and it was awesome. I was really prepared to be unimpressed but Mr Pudewa produced something in 2 hrs which I can't usually produce in 2 weeks with my kids- hand written original works. I have those boys he talks about who would rather do anything other than put pen to paper. My older son actually produced something completely orginal and hilarious. My younger (different seminar) did a summary/ rewrite of the Fox and the Grapes from Aesop.

What I have learned from the program is that Mr Pudewa is the salesman- he believes strongly in what he is selling (and it shows) and he teaches this product marvelously. He is a gifted presenter and teacher. The product itself is based on the work of a college prof called Webster. It is his method, which Pudewa has sort of rewarked to make it usable by so many of us.

I was so glad to have this opportunity! It really was a wonderful chance to try before I buy. My worry now is, am I able to implement in my home what Pudewa taught them? Which products would help me the most? TWSS alone would be frustrating, I think.

I think the answer to that is that you need the Student Writing Intensive AND TWSS. That way you can watch TWSS and be perplexed. Then go to SWI and watch with your kids as Pudewa shows them how to do his techniques. Then the TWSS will likely become clear.

I know that as I browsed the materials yesterday I could see that SWI wouldnt be enough for me to effectively teach this stuff- bc Im not at all familiar with his process! (He likes parents to sit in on the seminar but I had 2 other kids to manage/school/ entertain so I couldnt sit in). TWSS seems like the gold standard for the parent education.

My hold up is the cost. I was so happy to find about about the yahoo group IEWFamilies and the accompanying group for sale of used products. I have seen IEW on the for sale part of WTM boards but its only a savings of around 30 dollars. Im not sure its worth it at that price when you have to risk someone not sending it, or sending something damaged and so on.

Let me double post and tell you some of the tips we picked up!

1. read each sentence of a piece and pick out 3 key words (key word outline). Then rewrite the piece from this.
2. follow the banned word rules- don't use said
3. use because at least once.
4. use some good -ly words
5. don't erase- instead skip a line between so you can correct there. (Pudewa bit off one child's eraser which had the little ones rolling in laughter).

Its very step by step and it isnt a creative artsy process- the artistry comes later.

My children have been very blessed to work with one of Andrew Pudewa's trained instructors. It has been some of the best money we have ever spent.

I am going to be helping her at conference booths this spring and summer to cover some of the cost of three children taking her IEW classes next year.

You'll want to buy the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style and the Student Writing Intensive, the combo is $239.00. You might be able to find it used, if you buy it new and want to sell it later you can usually re-coup about 75% of the cost. Andrew also offers a no questions asked return policy, if it doesn't work for you, just send it back.

The TWSS is for the parent to watch before presenting the lesson, don't try and watch it all at once, you will burn out.

Molly, are you thinking of doing CC? Don't they offer IEW? I know there are folks out there that do teach IEW to groups of kids. My kids take IEW in Ashburn. I know that would be a haul for you.

We use IEW's materials. I have TWS&S and the SWI (A & C for my kids levels).

TWS&S is hard to get through alone. We are going to do it as a group this summer.

SWI has been a God send for our family. My younger children especially LOVE any school that involves them watching the class on TV We are also doing Seton's art lesson DVD's with great success.
For their SWI, I sit with them, and we do it together. We are having fun and I am pleased with my girls writing skills. (the youngest girl narrates, I write for her - she doesn't have to do SWI if she doesn't want to, but that hasn't happened yet).

My eldest daughter doesn't love it, but she doesn't hate it and will readily admit she has learned a lot and become a better writer. By and large, she does her lessons alone, and I look over and grade later. She is a very independent learner.

HTH

PS: Worth every cent!

I have TWSS. I even used it for a co-op class a few years ago, but I have never progressed very far with it and the kids just didn't get into it.

I love Andrew Pudewa and respect his work, so I have always figured I was just missing something. If I get the student package, then the kids watch it and do the writing, is that it? Perhaps that will help us all stay on task. I am so not a teacher!

I am thinking about CC and they do use IEW, which prompted me to consider it again. I have the Bible-based lessons, but again, I just haven't gotten to it. I kind of wish Andrew had a "packaged" curriculum that told me what to do when. When I piece things together, you know- history from one source, writing from another, science from another, etc, so much gets left on the shelf. Which goes back to my other thread about being a doer.

I am hoping that maybe I can figure IEW out for my 11 yr old who just hates school. Andrew Pudewa seems to really have boys figured out.

I wish it was a scripted easy to follow program too. I think for many of us the missing element is the written materials.

Im going to order the combo next payday and we'll see how it goes.

They do have the unconditional moneyback guarrantee!
