Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My almost seven-year-old learned to read last year using "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons." She is now reading "Little House in the Big Woods" to me with few mistakes. I thought that we would spend some more time doing phonics this year, but everything that I have worked on with her is much too easy.

Where do we go from here? If I skip phonics and go into spelling will she run into problems later? Do I even need to be worrying about this? I was planning to use Spelling Power, but she is not quite writing well enough yet. Can I just wait until next year?

Thanks,
Jenn in WY with dh Lincoln, Maria 98, Gerald 01, Benedict 03 and a little blessing due 03/06/06

Sounds like I wouldn't worry about the reading/phonics too much and focus on the writing. I have found that using a phonetically based spelling program later if necessary will fill in any gaps.

Once my ds was reading well and enjoyed reading on his own, (2nd grade)I started using Spell to Write and Read by Wanda Sanseri. I've really enjoyed it and have learned a lot myself.
