Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd is in 4th grade. We have been doing spelling but for more as a "filler" or because we should be doing it. She is an excellent speller, reads a ton and when I have given her words from the McGuffey's Progressive Speller she has gotten them right away(she gets words above her grade level). When we do dictation or I have her write little reports she seldom if ever gets any spelling errors.
My question is this, should I just ditch spelling as a seperate subject and just do it with the dictation, grammar, and narration or should I keep on having spelling? I would lean towards not having it any more, at least not this year, but feel like I need to hear that it is or is not o.k.

Darlene,
My oldest is an excellent speller and what I finally decided to do was just switch to vocabulary study using the series Vocabulary from Classical Roots.

We started this last year in 7th grade. I also started my 6th grader in this series this school year. I felt like he was just going through the motions w/spelling...you know, just learning it for the test and not retaining much.

Personally I feel it's OK not to have spelling (that's what you want to hear, right?). If I were one who did dictation and narrations on a regular basis, I probably wouldn't do the vocabulary either. However, I'm really strapped for time most days, and I do like that they can do the vocabulary on their own. But, yeah, a more natural approach to spelling w/a good, "natural" speller is just fine.

I was thinking of this too as far as the vocabulary. What I had been doing was write out a list of spelling words. The words that she did not know became vocabulary words which she looked up and used in a sentence and then Fridays was a quiz. I will just do this and diregard what I was doing as far as the spelling part.
Yes, I wanted to hear that it was o.k. not to have spelling,LOL. Like you said I felt as though I was just going through the motions of it.

I've been thinking the same thing with my 6th grader. I came across this site today. I like it because there are 3 worksheets for each week's words. Although it is a vocab lesson, I will be quizing him on the spelling and meanings on Fridays.
