Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi all,

I was JUST about to purchase the Memoria Press copybooks (set of 3 for the primary grades) but wondered if you all had any ideas as to a cheaper way to do this in these uncertain economic times?

I really want to get the younger kids copying things each day, but I want them to copy REAL things that have meaning and not just nonsense. Memoria Press seems to fit this bill, however, they do use the King James Version in these books. Is there a free-site where I can print off blank copybook pages (with the lines only) (too hard to get out to wal-mart these days for the real thing.. ) and then what do you think would be appropriate "copy" material for say, a 2nd grader and a 4th, 6th and 8th grader?

I had thought about having them copy Proverbs or the book of Wisdom, but my husband says that those books are more like poetry or written a little weird as far as reinforcing the kids punctuation etc. Are there fabulous Catholic quotes for kids somewhere?? That sounds like a good title for a book! "Fabulous Catholic Quotes for Kids" by EightWonders

Seriously though, can anyone lend me a little imagination to help me make this work on a budget?? Currently, I just have my 4th grader copying things from the ILL book. My oldest two I have writing paragraphs about things I make up each day. (ex: What do you want to be when you grow up? What do you "feel" like when Daddy takes you for one of his joy rides in the woods?? ) Stuff like that. They (mainly the boys) all have terrible handwriting, spelling AND punctuation!!! ("Where, oh where, did I go wrong?", but that is another story...for this literature major, who spells so well...... )

I did like the idea of the Memoria Press for the older kids since they use all of the cool Latin prayers they are supposed to be studying for Latina Christiana. But,again, no CHA CHING!!! $$$$$
Help????

I use the books we are using for school. One day, I may have them copy something from the Bible that I would like them to remember, one day it might be from the book we are reading, something that reinforces a grammar concept. On day it may be from a history book, something that caught my eye. It varies each day, I might find something that is morally sound and I may think, this would be great for dd to copy. Sometimes it is a quote from a Saint. It is very easy to find sentences, or paragraphs, depending on age, once you start looking around. My problem now is that I find so many I have a hard time choosing.

And you can have them copy their prayers in Latin right from the Latiana book.

God Bless
Robynn

Thanks Robynn,

That is sort of what I have ended up doing. One day, I have the oldest copy something from his Seton art book about the particular artist, or something from his religion book, like all the fruits of the Holy Spirit with the first sentence listed about each in the book. I guess I will just keep doing what I am doing for now with the older ones, and maybe try to find a book around the house for the little ones to work on copying. I guess as long as it is something beautiful and thoughtful, that is a good use of their time. I am new to copybooks, and always think I will scar them for life if I do something "wrong"!!

I have had the kids copy George Washington's Rules when we study US history.

Here are a few copywork sheets I have found online through the years:

Paidea Classics-- Greek Orthodox quotes from saints, etc.

Simply Charlotte Mason -- copywork sheets from Scripture, etc -- Protestant.

Scripture Copywork -- in different fonts like Handwriting without Tears, Zaner Bloser, etc.

George Washington Rules of Civility-- at Donna Young's site -- cursive practice.

Donna Young also has blank copywork paper and so does this notebooking site

I have a hard time planning copywork every day, partly because my kids generally dislike the physical act of writing.   I usually have them copy out prayers or poems bit by bit, and sometimes they choose a book they are fond of and copy out a line or two every day. For example, one year my fourth grader was copying from Lord of the Rings.

Have you seen this site where you can put your own text in and it generates the handwriting page?
