Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My daughter is in the first grade and we went to a Little Flowers Meeting where the public school 1st graders were already writing beautiful, legible cursive. My daughter can't form straight letters or hold her pencil correctly without a grip. Should I continue with printing until the 3rd grade or maybe give cursive a try? I had thought about letting her print until the 4th or 5th grade and then teach her Spencerian script. But maybe I should transition between the 2 with a basic cursive program?

I am a big proponent of early cursive (actually cursive first), but I'm not against print either!

I would suggest letting her try it and see what she thinks. It may turn out to be easier for her, since there are so few straight lines.

Try doing some activities that use the proper pencil grips - picking up tiny knobs on puzzles, etc. Or those weights that have the little knobs on top. This will help gain proper control with the pencil grip and should transfer over to holding the pencil well.

We've done the knobs and clothespins exercises. I think it must be genetic because I have always fisted my pencil in between my third and fourth fingers. I learned how to properly grip it by the time I reached 4th grade but I'm more comfortable fisting it. I learned the proper way so as not to flunk handwriting. Hmmm...I think I may let her try cursive. Should I get the cursive Handwriting Without Tears if that's what we did for printing?

Comparison is the death of contentment.

and/or

Keep your eyes on your own paper.

I keep these quotes handy because I often tend to compare. My neices are 2-3 years younger than my dd and their printing AND cursive are far superior to my dd. Turns out dd has vision issues (conversion insufficiency) and she will struggle more in this area.

Go ahead and try cursive as something fun to play with. Not to keep up with the Joneses.

Hope this helps.

That's exactly what I told myself after awhile. Just like every child I know, she has her strengths and weaknesses. It's been very easy to keep my eyes on our own work because were not confronted with someone else's work on a daily or weekly basis. It was the first time I was confronted with another child's work and of course, the devil took me for a ride. Thanks for the friendly reminder.
