Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does this "count" as reading? I know it's what our 6yo was doing just before he started undeniably reading, sounding out words he'd never seen, not long after he turned 4. And not until about this age has either of our sons done this with words just as a matter of remembering something they'd seen before. It was about the time they turned 2 when they learned their letters and both knew long before any of this sounding-out of words or sight-reading the sounds each letter made.

Maybe this is more of a special blessings post; the reason I ask is because it only adds to my puzzlement about our almost-4-year-old's delays (he'll be seeing a developmental pediatrician early in the Fall.) His language and speech seem to be about a year behind, after about a year of nearly stagnant development in those areas between 2 and 3, and I would guess his mind and emotions are generally also about the almost 3-year-old level, but otherwise he seems happy and healthy, just younger. I'm just surprised he's doing this reading-related stuff at the same age as his brother, who had no such delays and at 6 reads and learns from what seem to be fourth or fifth grade level books, on his own initiative.

He is doing this "early reading" now, has been for a short while but seems to be picking up the pace, and he's doing it on his own, not with us trying to get him to read. He sounds out each letter sound, then says the word, like "b-o-x -- box" or "c-a-t -- cat." Our 6yo spent longer in a phase where he was sounding out each sound but not putting together the word. I know our 3yo has had these words shown to him before, though. Last night we tried showing him "t-o-m" (the letters in his nickname) and he said the sounds, but sounded like he attempted the full word as "mit!" He constructs words himself out of letter magnets, but he really can't write or draw anything close to letters yet.

Theresa, I'm leary to offer an opinion because I don't have any experience with learning delays - maybe you should post in Special Blessings, too.

I will say that all of my children have memorized the way a word looks on a page and knew what it said and proudly called that reading. I let them. It's usually going on at the same time that they start de-coding which also sounds like what your son is doing.

I'd say continue with your relaxed approach and follow his lead. Reading and decoding seems to "click" at different times for each child. I just move very slowly until the day it "clicks" and after that there has been no holding my older two back.

Good luck with reading!
