I am interested in starting a new journal for myself. I searched the archives and found this topic and will read it carefully later today during my quiet time. In the mean time, I wanted to get new in put from you all.
I would like a journal that is:
beautiful
functional
inspirational
sturdy
easy
can adapt for different purposes/ages
What journals are you all using?

I love journaling, Angie, but I'm a terrible failure at it. I found that I journal best on my blog. I have a private one for more private thoughts of mine. I much prefer a beautiful book and a nice, non-gloppy, smooth writing pen. I'm very particular about writing instruments.  I love the idea of getting my journal out and writing my thoughts on the paper. There is something to be said for not being able to hit the delete key and editing words. Thoughts come out freely and honestly on paper. BUT...everytime I get my journal out to write, the children find me (or it) and either embellish or interrupt, and I get frustrated and don't pick it up again for a while. I think it might just be my season of life.
Hmmmm...my preferred journal is a beautiful pink or floral pattern - something feminine. It has a ribbon marker. It must have lines - I can't write straight without them. And I prefer a cream color paper. And, did I mention a good pen - I fiercely guard my good pens.
Very expensive stuff here - but it might serve for inspiration - Levenger.

Angie,
I have found that composition notebooks ( I try to get some that have pretty designs, not the black and white ones) work best for me. They are not the prettiest option out there but, I find the pretty journals uncomfortable to write on: they tend to be on the smaller side and they don't always stay open. Composition notebooks stay open, give me plenty of space to write and they are not bulky. They are not expensive and they adapt for several purposes.
I use them to write during my prayer time. I write quotes from books I am reading, thoughts,reflections. I try to record what I think the Lord is telling me at a particular moment. Sometimes I record books I have read or books I want to read. Sometimes I even draw or doodle!
Oh! and when I finish with the notebook they don't take much room on my shelves.

Thank you, Jennifer and Natalia. I am inspired by the Commonplace Jounal at Levenger and I'm going to take a trip to Staples to look at compostion notebooks. I'm also seriously considering MacBeth's idea in the original Journal topic, binding our own. Still thinking...

You can adapt a composition notebook into a pretty journal by covering the front and back in pretty scrapbooking paper or pretty fabric, and putting an insert on the back of the cover with paper or fabric to cover the edges of the front cover. We made neat travel journals for my niece's birthdays when much of our extended family was going to Italy, and put map paper, and an old world map of Italy on the front. My nieces loved their gifts from their cousin (my daughter).

I take composition notebooks and cover them both inside and out with pretty scrapbook paper. I got this idea from Dawn. I also attach a ribbon in the back for a bookmark. In the past I've purchased the primary ones (blank space on top, primary lines below) for my children. They love their journal.

Thank you, Tracy and KC! All of this input has been so helpful in helping me to see what I'm wanting...
For this journal I want to follow the example of Elisabeth Leseur and focus on short resolutions and points to ponder. I ended up purchasing large (4X6) unlined and lined index cards. They are the perfect size and thickness to write and draw on. I have three ziplock bags ready with the cards, a pen, and colored pencils. One bag is in my purse, one at my desk, and one in my van. After writing one thought/point/resolution/scripture/quote/etc., I put it back in the bag. In time, I hope to "tag" them, organize them by date and tag, then bind them as MacBeth described in the original post.
From here, I hope to add more journaling and types of journals to our family. I'm open to more and all suggestions!

Nevermind. I see it's the one you mentioned in t he original post here. I didn't realize. I guess I just didn't understand how this would work with index cards. I think it's a grand idea though!  I'm definitely a quote/Scripture person, and love journaling, so this is a great idea for me (the index card idea). I'm just trying to figure out the logistics of it all.

I make my own books, because mine is an art journal
You can see lots of my work on my blog, but there are a whole slew of sites that tell you how to make a book. I made it so I had the paper I like, and I find I am happiest with it. Now all I need to do is find a great way to cover it

how funny, I use the composition notebooks too!
I am attracted to the more "beautiful" ones, but always seem to go back to these
Key factor is the binding is sewn so the pages don't rip out, and no spiral to snag on things, yet they stay flat
at the campus bookstore they can even be found with BLANK pages--no lines--which I like even better! but I usually just pick up a cheap lined one. I go through them fairly fast so don't get around to decorating them!
This is my "sanity journal". I pour out everything there. I "process" as I write. It's how I learn how I'm really feeling, how I can get to God . . . Mine are not at all neat. As far as saving them----well, I really intend to burn them someday!, maybe go through each and rip out the 3 or 4 pages worth saving first------!!! Once in awhile there is a start of a poem or something else really inspired. THey used to be more about that------but these days, it's just sanity!
PS, what works best for me is to go once a week to the public library or coffee shop and journal for an hour or so. I seem to do better with longer stretches where I can really concentrate vs. 15 minute spells, it takes me awhile to "connect." I really need this time and my generous husband gives it to me!! Some people find early morning works well. I wish I was a morning person but I just---am---not!
