Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi everyone,

My oldest dd will be in 8th grade this fall. I am very interested in enrolling her in an online course where she can read some excellent literature and hone her writing skills at the same time.

Memoria Press Online Academy has this course on the short story which might work as she is an accelerated learner and writer, but does anyone know of any other courses out there? I seem to remember in the recesses of my very dim memory that Angelicum had some classes of this sort? If anyone has any personal recommendations, I would love to hear them.

We did register for Latina Christiana I with Memoria last year and it went very well. She will be registered for LC II this year as well, so I can recommend their Latin courses online.

Hi Jennifer!

I used www.writeguide.com with my son in his 7th-8th grade years. You are assigned an online tutor (you can even ask for one who is Catholic) and then pick any writing project you want to do - from short story to research paper. You also get to choose how long you want to use the service - I believe it is from 1 month to a whole year (12 mos.)
Cost is based on time frame chosen ($75 - $680)

It is completely individualized and you tell the instructor what you want your child to work on.

We always chose the one month time frame - they e-mail back and forth once a day (weekdays, no holidays) for the alloted time. That was plenty of time to get our projects done. And if you find out you are not finished you can choose to reenroll or just quit and finish on your own. Sometimes I just needed him to get a good handle on the paper and we could take it from there.

I was very pleased with the service and my son enjoyed it too. Writing is NOT my subject and the kids tend to get annoyed with me "criticizing" their work So this was a great way to let someone else handle that!

God Bless,

Hi Amy!

Thanks so much for your recommendation!    Writeguide sounds just perfect for us!! I have a problem with my oldest accepting criticism, too, though she is getting better. But, my littles need me terribly this coming school year and my oldest is a good independent learner--I'm off to browse the site and see what she likes...

OH, and have you ever had one of your kids do the grammar overview class? It looks good, as well.

Jennifer,

I have never tried the grammar class - let me know how it is if you try it!

Also, just wanted to mention that if you use Lingua Mater by Margot Davidson, she will review/critique any of the writing assignments from there for $5 each.

Blessings,

Thanks, again, Amy!

I have Lingua Mater but I didn't know that Margot would provide that service, thanks!
